TALENT STORMS HOME IN THE INVESTEC OAKS

Talent (Richard Hughes Up), winner of The Epsom Investec Oaks (Gr.1)
The lesser fancied Talent from Ralph Beckett’s stable stormed down the stretch in front of the Epsom stands in the Gr.1 Investec Oaks, to get the better of stable companion Secret Gesture. Richard Hughes, who had earned his first British Classic at the beginning of the month in the 1000 Guineas, weaved through the field from the rear to win his second, on the New Approach filly. Richard had his mount Talent towards the rear after failing to get a clear run in the early stages, switched out right with 4 furlongs left, maneuvered through horses inside the last 2 furlongs and with a strong gallop sped past Secret Gesture 150 yards from home. The Lark finished third while the favourite Moth was fourth.
"I never expected to win one Oaks so to finish first and second is an extraordinary day," said trainer Ralph Beckett on his 1-2 feat in the Oaks. "She is tough. I wasn't watching her until she loomed up on the outside. He put her in the race and she started tanking then," added Beckett.
"I rode her work during the week and, to be honest, I wasn’t impressed. I came home and said she’s skinnier than me," said Richard Hughes said after winning his second British Classic winner.
