Ruler Of The World

Galileo’s Ruler Of The World turned out to be the Monarch at Epsom Downs, on Saturday, triumphing in the 234th running of the G1 Investec Derby. Jockey Ryan Moore was astride Ruler Of The World and the man with the magic wand, Aidan O’Brien trains the winner. “This is the most important race for me," said Aidan O’Brien, who was leading in his fourth Epsom Derby winner. "It is just incredible," he added. "We are so lucky to be in the position that we are in, to get such horses. They are incredibly bred horses and the dream is for this to happen."

All the attention revolved around the unbeaten Dawn Approach as the dozen runners lined up for the Derby. The winner of the 2000 Guineas was the 5-4 favourite and the main subject before the race was if he would get the distance. Dawn Approach failed to settle in mid-field early in the race and headed to lead the pack 6 furlongs out. He was a spent force even before the race got to a boil and turned out to be a disappointment, finishing last.

Aidan had five contenders in the race and Ruler Of The World was the second in demand among them after Battle Of Marengo which had O’Brien Junior on the saddle. Rayan Moore had the ‘Ruler’ settled back towards the rear during the early part of the trip and moved to be seventh as they approached the straight. As Dawn Approach started to falter, it was Battle Of Marengo who headed to the lead. Rayan made his move on his mount swiftly and they were quickly past their stable companion. Ruler Of The World stayed on well to win by a length and a half. Libertarian came with a flourish to snatch the second place close to the winning post while Galileo Rock also came in late to get to the third spot, pushing Battle Of Marengo to fourth.

"I planned to be a bit closer, but I just didn’t get away very well and it was a very messy race," said Ryan Moore and added, "it was quite a tactical race, they didn’t go mad and I got some cover and followed Dawn Approach. The pace started to lift coming down the hill and I was able to creep into it nicely. He quickened up very impressively and got there very quickly and easily, then had a little look when he got there. I had to go on when I did, as although it was a bit soon and he was very green I knew he’d stay the trip very well. He’s improved a lot from Chester and I think he’ll get further. He showed a really likeable attitude, as for a horse having only his third run he was at the front quickly enough but he really toughed it out. I’m very lucky to be in this position and be riding these horses.”
