Declaration Of War (Joseph O'Brien Up), winner of The Queen Anne Stakes (Gr. I)
Aidan O’Brien trained Declaration of War won opening race of the Royal meeting at the Ascot, the G1 Queen Ann Stakes. It was the third win for trainer Aidan in the race and his 38th success at the Royal Ascot. Jockey Joseph O’Brien, who rode Declaration of War, held him back in mid-field early on and started to close in, to track the leaders 2 furlongs out. Not finding a clear passage approaching the last furlong, he was switched left and forced his way to stride clear of Aljamaaheer by three parts of a length. Gregorian was third another half a length adrift. The Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup conqueror Animal Kingdom was strongly favoured to win the race but failed to reproduce his brilliance and finished a poor 11th.
O’Brien junior after winning the race said: "We were a bit disappointed after Newbury but we had him at 100 per cent today. I was going very well, it got a little bit tight but he quickened up and idled when I got there. He's a very good horse. It’s nice to start off on a good foot."
"We thought the world of him last year and I didn’t have him ready for the Lockinge, but he’d made great progress since and has come back to what we hoped he would be," said the trainer. "We learned in the Lockinge that he’s all speed, and so he waited and waited today. He’s a big, powerful horse and when Joseph produced him he put his head in there and went through. It doesn’t get any better than this."
