Just a fortnight after being a big let down in the Epsom Derby, Dawn Approach bounced back to winning ways in the G1 St. James Palace Stakes, beating Tornado in a nail biting finish. Dawn Approach, sent in as the 5-4 favourite, was held up in mid-field early and started to make headway approaching the last two furlongs. Both Dawn Approach and Tornado had to make their way through a rough passage near the quarter pole as they headed forward. Dawn Approach quickened well under Kevin Manning entering the final furlong to lead but a determined Richard Hughes urged Tornado to gallop strongly. The duo went stride for stride all through the last furlong and Dawn Approach edged out Tornado by a short head at the wire.
"The biggest risk is not taking the risk," remarked the owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on the trainer’s late decision to run. "Jim bred the horse and knows the horse very well, so when he decided to run we all supported him. That proved to me that he’s the best miler in the world."
The winning trainer Jim Bolger said: "You take chances, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Sheikh Mohammed was a very willing risk-taker. He's [Dawn Approach] very tough and hard, he was fortunate to survive the bump and the rest is history. I knew he wouldn't let me down."
