Richard Hannon trained Sky Lantern, the winner of the 1000 Guineas, put on show a classy performance to win the G 1 Coronation Stakes at the Royal Ascot. Richard Hughes, who could only manage a couple of seconds and thirds while all his other mounts – many of them fancied- were unplaced in this edition of the Royal Meeting, showed his prowess while bringing out the best in the 3 year old filly Sky Lantern.
Drawn outward in 16, the 9-2 favourite took a clean start and was held back at the rear with Hughes finding no urgency to hurry up. Improving steadily, all along on the outer, Sky Lantern hit the front near the final pole when Hughes shifted gears on his mount and dashed clear to be four lengths ahead of the runner-up Kenhope. Just The Judge was third.
"Richard [Hannon] said to go out there and enjoy myself and do what I’m good at, and that made all the difference," said a relieved Hughes in an emotional tune. "She had to be ridden like that to win, and made the other horses look slow," he added.
Hannon’s son and assistant trainer Richard Hannon Jr said, "She was really special, I thought she could win a Coronation but I never thought she could win like that.”
