Jim Bolger trained Trading Leather was ridden by Kevin Manning to a commendable win in the Dubai Duty Free sponsored G1 Irish Derby. Bolger after a disappointing ‘Epsom’ with Dawn Approach just four weeks ago, returned to the Classic at Curragh with Trading Leather to halt the monopoly of trainer Aidan O’Brien. Aidan’s hero of the Epsom Derby, Ruler of the World never rose to the occasion and ended up a tame fifth.

Kevin Manning settled Trading Leather well in third, behind Cap O’Rushes and Ralston Road, with the two who setting a keen pace. Trading Leather started to make headway with three furlongs left, getting closer to the leaders. Moving over to lead the field inside the last 1 ½ furlongs, the son of Teofilo stayed well to win. Galileo Rock improved to be second inside the final furlong and stayed there after failing to collar the winner. Festive Cheer and Cap O’Rushes finished third and fourth respectively.

Commenting on the victory, the winning jockey Kevin Manning said, “It was a true-run race and he picked up and lengthened all the way to the line. He has a will to win and loves that quick ground. He has everything that you want in a top mile-and-a-half horse and this is one of the most special ones of my career. It’s a great privilege to win.”

"It doesn't get much better than this," said trainer Bolger who is winning the race for the second time. "He is not easy at home - he takes a lot of riding and keeping under control. I can't credit my staff enough.
