By Racing Correspondent | 07 Jul 2013 |
Midnight Aria (Jesse Campbell Up), winner of The Queen's Plate
Nicholas Gonzalez trained Midnight Aria won the 154th edition of the Queen’s Plate worth Canadian $ 1 million, at Woodbine Racetrack in Rexdale, a suburb of Toronto. The race for 3 year old that is traditionally run over a mile and a quarter does not have a Graded tag as it is confined purely to Canadian Bred horses. Yet it is regarded as Canada’s most celebrated race, being the oldest continuously run stakes in North America.
Midnight Aria which was a spent force while finishing third in the Plate Trial about a month ago, held on enthusiastically by half a length at the finish from the favourite Up With The Birds. Taking advantage of draw one, Midnight Aria set off to lead the field. On entering the final stretch Midnight Aria enhanced the lead to over 3 1/2 lengths when the jockey Jesse M Campbell asked for more. Up With The Birds came with a flourish after wriggling out of traffic snarl near the bend but the effort was just not enough as the 16-1 chance Midnight Aria had touched down by half a length.
