Alain de Royer-Dupre trained Chicquita shed her maiden status in the G1 Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh on Saturday. The daughter of Montjeu had arrived from France winless from her three starts, more due to her errant tendency of veering out in the final stages. The filly which had the class and talent in her to go for this classic was entrusted to Johnny Murtagh. Despite being a maiden, Chiquita was sent into the race at 9-2.

Joseph O’Brien took Just Pretending to the lead and set a steady pace with the favourite Riposte settled in a close second by Tom Queally. Murtagh had Chiquita easily in third and angled left inside the final furlong to make her bid. The filly veered left again while going past the leader Just Pretending inside the last 100 yards but stayed on strongly to win by half a length from Venus De Milo which closed in late to beat Just Pretending.

“She hadn’t won before this race, but I knew she was a top-class filly,” said trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre. “We came here because The Curragh is the typical race track for a filly like her with a long acceleration who stays. Johnny rode her well, as she’s not easy and you have to relax on her early and not ask for too much too quickly.” About her future prospects the trainer added, "The main race for a filly like her is the Prix Vermeille and then maybe the Arc."
