Richard Hannon trained Toronado, very intelligently ridden by Richard Hughes triumphed in the G1 Qipco Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. With the two giants Dawn Approach and Toronado vying for honours in a race that could well be called as “Duel on the Downs”, the son of High Chaparral came out on top in a sensational finish. Richard Hughes showed no urgency as the race started and settled Toronado off the pace in second last position while Dawn Approach’s pace setter storming into the lead within the first furlong after a rather slow beginning. Closing up smoothly, Toronado tracked the leaders approaching the last two furlongs. Dawn Approach hit the front with a furlong left in the race and Hughes, who had patiently waited close behind timed his move with precision to forge strongly and go ahead by half a length.
“Revenge is sweet, I suppose, but they are two great horses,” expressed an excited Richard Hannon, who led in his third Sussex renewal. “We have had some good horses, including [2010 winner] Canford Cliffs and the like, but Richard [Hughes] says he is the best he has ridden. He’s very good.”
A confident Richard Hughes, who could afford giving Toronado a pat on the neck in jubilation before passing the winning post said, “When I kicked him in the belly, he was not as instant as he would have been on fast ground, but it was still great. It was a true run race, I was always travelling well and he was very brave.”
