SHIROCCO’S WILD COCO WINS THE BLACKROCK FILLIES’ STAKES
By Racing Correspondent | 01 Aug 2013 |
Lady Cicil trained Wild Coco repeated her triumph in the G3 Blackrock Fillies’ Stakes at Goodwood for the second successive year in a runaway fashion. The sparingly raced Wild Coco sent in as the favourite at 5-6 among the eight runners which lined up for the start. Jockey Tom Queally settled Wild Coco in fifth early, always traveling wide. Moving into contention as they approached the last quarter pole the 5 year old mare responded readily without much persuasion and lengthened its stride. Elik followed in second, a length and three quarters in front of Alta Lilea.
"She retains all her ability and maybe some more," said the winning jockey Tom Queally. "She was equally as impressive as last year and the ground was safe, so we needed to get her out. I wanted to go around for as long as I could on the bridle and keep her together, even if it cost me some ground and she won pretty good. We hope she can go on to better things, as Sir Henry was always very keen on her and the owners paid a pretty penny for her, so it’s paid dividends. I think she can make her presence felt at Group 1 level and she’s got class, a bit of speed and a few gears. She traveled through the race with conviction. The ground is key to her and very important--she certainly wouldn’t want it any quicker than this."
"The hope is to try and win a Group 1 with her and the Yorkshire Oaks is the obvious place to go but that will be dependent on the ground," said trainer Lady Cecil on Wild Coco's future.
