Arguably the best jockey on the Indian circuit, Y.S. Srinath signed off the Bangalore Winter Season in a blaze of glory, recording a double and taking his tally to a whopping 56 to emerge as the Champion Jockey of the Season. It was indeed a brilliant effort on the part of the jockey who showed good discipline, fine temperament and great maturity. Given the constant battle that he had to wage to keep his weight under control, the tall Srinath has shown what one can achieve if there is a will. The only Indian jockey to have ridden 36 winners at Macau, Srinath is destined to go places if he continues with the same level of motivation. With rewards plenty for such talent, one is sure that Srinath will continue in the same vein. Ganapathy was the leading trainer and he has been one ever since he took license a few years ago. Such is his domination that it is unlikely he will lose his grip on the championship. He may lose a few big races but he cannot be displaced from the top for more time to come. The ever-growing Dr Ramaswamy’s string of champion horses is under his charge. Dr M A M Ramaswamy was the leading individual owner as also joint owner as this year, he has quite a few horses in partnership with breeder Zavaray Poonawalla. The Kunigal Stud Farm was the Leading Stud Farm with 32 winners. Flashing Star who won the Gr.1 Poonawalla Bangalore Derby, was the Champion Horse of the Season while three-year old Southern Empire who won four races from as many starts, was the Horse of the Season. The long winding season which also featured the running of the Indian Turf Invitation Cup Weekend races was a roaring success. The giant screen that was installed for the important days of racing was a big hit with the race goers and there is hope that this will become a permanent feature by the time the Summer Season starts on May 13. The way totalizators pools have been bringing in the money, the Bangalore Turf Club should have no problem in finding the resources for funding the giant screen.
