Aurelian (A.Imran Khan up), winner of the Sringeri Plate, being led in by trainer Mr.J.S.Dhariwal & owner Mr.Marthand Singh Mahindra

Jaggy Dhariwal trained Aurelian asserted his superiority when winning the 1400 metres Sringeri Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 45, which featured Saturday’s races. Aurelian who had finished behind Ministrel’s Girl over a mile in his last outing, enjoyed the drop in distance as he led the field from the start and sped away for a comfortable win. Lanark who had no worthwhile form to back his credentials was the firm favourite, with the rest available to nourishing odds. Aurelian who had faltered on the last occasion with similar tactics over a mile, this time out enjoyed the free run in the front and got stronger on turning for home and won pulling up from Lanark who was flat-footed. Emilio held on to take the third spot from Time To Celebrate who was sluggish at the start and was forced to travel wide all the way. Money With Talent could have shed her maiden status earlier but her aversion to the gate and poor getaways had ensured that she did not justify her potential. Now taking on a poor quality opposition and showing good improvement in her gate manners, Money With Talent justified the cramped odds laid on her, by winning the Agumbe Trophy, over seven furlongs, with a start to finish dash. Peakaboo ran second against the run of expectations to finish a faraway second, with Little Robin plodding home to be third. Trainer Arjun Mangalorkar was in the limelight, saddling three winners. First-timer, Knight led from the start and then held on grimly to win from Alandra who was surely crying for more ground. Alvinia won thanks to some forceful riding by jockey Srinath. Alvinia was well placed in the front group with jockey Chisty on Mazeppa unable to take a good forward position in the mile long race, so much so that the lesser fancied runner had to travel wide all the way and then cover a big leeway on the eventual winner. Though Mazeppa devoured ground and came menacingly close, the winning post came to the rescue of Alvinia who won by a fast diminishing long neck. Winner number three for Arjun Mangalorkar came through favourite Wafadar who defied the penalty for his last win by holding on resolutely and surviving a challenge thrown by Place Her Well. Shining Example, who had showed out in a mock race, had no trouble winning the 1400 metres Bhadravathi Plate, with a profitable end to end mission. Green Park who had finished down the field as a fancied runner last time out, flashed home with a flourish to take the second spot. The five-year old mare has proved to be a big drain on the public, not running two races alike. In the day’s other action, Pat On The Back fought out with Gem of a Lady to win the 1400 metres Makalidurga Plate. Pat On The Back who had won twice earlier in the season over longer trips, was at home even over the reduced trip, winning from the front. Gem of a Lady had all the chances but the five-year old mare has always been found wanting at a crucial stage of the race.
