Trainer M Srinivas Reddy leading Sheer Genius (P S Chouhan Up), winner of The Dr.Harish Chandra Memorial Cup

The ever consistent Sheer Genius (Gaswar-Carrera) which had never finished off the board in its career spanning 10 runs, came with a splendid re-run to snatch the Dr.Harish Chandra Memorial Cup. Racing in front of the field of seven horses from the start, Sheer Genius brought them into the home stretch. Chal Bhai Chal had improved gradually to be up in second as they turned for home with All Pepper a close third along the rails. Passing the 2 furlongs pole Chal Bhai Chal forged to the lead and opened a gap of over two lengths. When things were looking rosy for Chal Bhai Chal, Aegis started to come up with a strong gallop. P.S.Chouhan continued to give a hard ride on Sheer Genius despite being headed and this Srinivas Reddy’s trainee rallied strongly with a renewed effort to beat Chal Bhai Chal on the post. Aegis finished third another half a length away.

S.S.Faisal Hassan trained The Challenge (Game Plan-On The Big Screen) scored an encore in an emphatic fashion in theNawab Mehdi Jung Bahadur Memorial Cup. After winning a 1600 metres trip a week earlier, The Challenge was pitched in a field of nine runners over an extended trip of 200 metres. Apprentice J. Vikas held back The Challenge towards the rear in second last position. He was always travelling wide of the field. Sheikhs Emperor and Moghul Emperor were matching strides in front as the field moved into the last 300 metres. Novaya Zemlya started to creep up even as The Challenge began to raise a gallop on the wide outside. The Challenge picked up momentum to surge ahead and win. Novaya Zemlya finished second while Shades of Victory finished third.

Jockey A.Imran Khan rode a double with Netto trained Galiat and Zoheb Shaikh trained Maths Professor. Galiat (Mull of Kintyre-Brazilia), a winner in its second run during the latter part of the last winter season, did well to repeat that feat in the Flowers of the Forest Cup. Kohinoor Thunder set the pace with Ranjha in second and Galiat hugging the rails in third. As they came into the last 300 metres Symbol of Victory and Classic Wish also started to make their move from the outside. Imran Khan in the meanwhile rode out Galiat along the shortest path and took the lead convincingly. Kohinoor Thunder held on in second while Classic Wish and Symbol of Victory finished third and fourth respectively.

Maths Professor (Mathematician-Centralito) made every post a winning one en-route to a maiden victory in the higher division of the Set Alight Plate, a six furlongs sprint for 3 year old maiden horses. Jumping out smartly from the outermost draw in the field of eleven runners, Maths Professor came quickly to run along the inner rails in front. Into the last 2 furlongs Imran Khan looked back as Maths Professor extended the lead over the nearest horse Just Once. Winds of Victor improved late but that was just enough to beat Just Once for the second place.

Laxman Singh trained Tejaswini (Princely Heir-I Have A Dream) shed its maiden ranks in the lower division. Star Wings led the field with Deal Maker and Tejaswani following together. Into the home stretch Tejaswini was ridden out by A.M.Tograllu to hit the front and stretch out to win by a big margin. Star Wings just managed to hold on to the second place from the late finishing Big Move.

Trainer Zoheb Shaikh who won the concluding race with Maths Professor had earlier in the day saddled Sabreen Princess (Black Cash-Revived Up) to a runaway maiden win in the Maltese Prince Plate. The speedy Rajkumar set out in front, followed by Ziv and the favourite Sabreen Princess improving to be third as they came into the final straight. Rajkumar packed up early on the straight and jockey Ch.K.Chary drove Sabreen Princess to the front and stretched out well. Camacho Speed finished second about 5 ½ lengths away, while Komo Komo Komo improved to be third, another ½ a length behind. Guiding Spirit was withdrawn before the race.

K.Satheesh trained Sweet Candy (Hurricane State-Integral) beat Baazigar, the shortest priced favourite in recent times, in the Thungabhadra Plate, the first race of the day. Baazigar, which had won all its four starts, finally met its match. Showing plenty of speed, Baazigar set out to lead the field and was clear by over four lengths as they came into the home stretch. Jockey Imran Khan looked back on top of the straight probably sensing that there wasn’t enough fuel in the tank to see him through till the finish. Sweet Candy headed past Travaldo and started to inch closer to Baazigar inside the last 200 metres. Imran started to look back again in distress and it was evident this time that the tank was actually going dry. Sweet Candy surged ahead without much resistance by the favourite and won well. Baazigar lost the runner-up berth to Any Given Time close to the winning post.
