The Stewards of the RWITC in a meeting held at the Mahalaxmi racecourse on Monday, ruled to enhance jockey Martin Dwyer’s suspension, from the original seven weeks to eight months.  It may be recalled that Dwyer was suspended on charges of not allowing his mount Ice Age to run on its merits during the last Mumbai season. Prime favourite Ice Age (6/4) was seen gaining ground in the homestretch, but failed to keep a straight course, veering inwards and almost bumping into the horses on the inside. This had occurred right across the stands. This had led to a huge public outrage with race-goers storming into the paddock creating a riot like situation demanding action. A Stewards’ enquiry was called for immediately and after due deliberations, Ice Age was declared a ‘non-starter.’ All bets on the horse were refunded.

Martin Dwyer’s revised suspension now comes into effect from August 31st 2013 to April 30th 2014. He has the option to appeal against the sentence, which he is most likely to do.
