Rising Fame survives a close call

Rising Fame (B.Prakash up) winner of the Karnataka Trophy being led in by Mr.KaranSingh (deputising for trainer Mr.Ganapathy)

Charing Cross lost ground approaching the final bend as he was cramped for space and this allowed Rising Fame to gain a few lengths on the favourite which made a crucial difference to the outcome of the 1400-metre Karnataka Trophy, a race for horses bred in Karnataka, the feature event of Saturday’s races. Though Charing Cross came with a big run, the winning post came to the rescue of Rising Fame who just about lasted out at the expense of the favourite. Charing Cross went into the race as a cramped odds-on favourite, with Rising Fame next in demand. Approaching the final bend, Prakash on Rising Fame moved up on the outside, even as Charing Cross had be held back because he was denied a clear run. Srinath had to switch his mount on the outside after straightening out which allowed good leeway for the eventual winner and was the cause of the defeat of the favourite. This was the only race Prakash was in his elements. Otherwise, his poor quality rides on ensured the defeat of Tribal Lady and Polar Force. Prakash on Polar Force did not want to maneuver into a good position and at every opportunity, denied the got-abroad gelding a clear run. The way he finished on only served to highlight what Prakash did not do on the horse to get the best out of the gelding. Fioredoro looked like a winner in the entire homestretch but lost by a whisker to Nordic Star in the dying moments of the race. The drifting price on Tribal Lady was a clear give away. Tribal Lady bolted to the front in the race run over mile and quarter and then did not have enough gas and finished down the field. This provided an opportunity for Storm Eagle to record a win at the expense of Pine Forest. Didjeridu lasted out comfortably to win from a late-finishing Stoli Orange who was crying for more ground. Though Allez Indi was running over a sharp trip, she proved good enough for the field as jockey Srinath worked at getting a favourable position from the inside draw. The well bred filly then stretched away for a comfortable win over Splendid Glory. Gnaneshwar who has been deprived the use of the whip for four whip-related offenses, guided Badge of Honour to a start to finish victory over Lovely Empress. Fancied Radical Power fought for his head right through the journey and when Appu allowed him to stretch out in the run in for home, he was found wanting and ended up third. Pleaser was backed to the exclusion of his rivals but the progeny of Burden of Proof who did not have the benefit of a good forward run, packed up under pressure after raising hopes at the top of the straight. Bay Bomber, despite cutting an erratic course, proved too good in the end.
