VENDETTA

The Hyderabad Winter Season 2008-09 came to an end, for academic reasons and the awards for various categories were declared as the extra day’s racing scheduled for Wednesday 11th March not being included for tabulation of awards. K.S.V.Prasad Raju emerged as the champion trainer after a tough fight with L.D’Silva. This is the third successive winter championship for Prasad. A.Imran Khan took the crown among the jockeys. Nitin Singh turned out to be the leading apprentice. Dr.M.A.M.Ramaswamy was the leading owner once again with a total stake amount of Rs.75, 84,900 while M/s.P.Pratap Chand Reddy & Sushil Kumar Gupta were the leading joint owners with an aggregate earning of Rs.46, 44.485. The Winter Derby winner, Reconnect was adjudged as the Champion horse while Auxilliary was declared as the Horse of the season.

Vendetta romped home in style in the Alcock Arabian Stakes (Gr.III), the feature race of the day. The first favourite, Siph Salar was withdrawn in the last minute as the vets were not convinced about his strides when trotted and it turned out to be easy going for Vendetta. This victory in the graded race was an icing on the cake for the champion lad, Imran Khan.

Suraj Narredu punched home on Hurricane Bay, to register a popular victory in the Sri. S. Ramakrishnam Raju Memorial Cup, for horses in the highest category. Improving from fifth position as the field straightened up, Hurricane Bay joined Doing my Best in front and surged ahead in the last 20 metres to win. Bold Blast came in late and finished a close third. Shikra was permitted to be withdrawn after jockey P.S.Chouhan reported sick and a replacement could not be found. Global Presence was withdrawn near the gates.

Adorna, who hadn’t shown much form this season, sprang a surprise, coming from way behind to upset Canopus close home in the Bonzer Cup run over 2400 metres. Canopus, after playing second fiddle in the first 1000 metres, took over the running and was a clear two lengths ahead of the rest on the straight and despite the best efforts of jockey Mukesh, lost to Adorna.

Chesapeake shed his maiden status, in the opener, winning with a measure of comfort from Kahinoor Delight.

The Donegal Plate was again a race for maiden three year olds and was won by Faisal Hassan’s Splendid Act after fighting out with the favourite Queen of Sheeba throughout the last furlong. Shoban Babu on Splendid Act and Gnaneshwar on Queen of Sheeba gave their best throughout the fight but the former surged slightly ahead to land the spoils.

Imran Chisty with a vigorous ride on Sprucespringstien emerged victorious in the higher division of the Coin of Silver Plate beating Ultra Violet Ray to second place.

The higher division was won by Shehzad Abba’s Hyper Kinetic in a closely fought out race with Dash on Regardless. The public choice, Maximum City failed to reproduce his earlier runs and finished a tame third.

Imran Chisty replaced the medically unfit P.S.Chouhan on Blue Magic in the Universal Star Plate, the last race of the day and won it comfortably, thus scoring a double.
