Linette pulls it off

By Sharan Kumar | 11 Mar 2006 | BANGALORE

Linette (Y.S.Srinath up), winner of the Hyderabad Silver Vase, being led in by trainer Mr.M.Eshwer & owner Mrs.S.Foster

Michael Eshwer trained Linette lasted out to win the Hyderabad Silver Vase, a sprint race for horses rated 40 and above, which featured Saturday's races. Linette had the race sewn up as Srinath drove the favourite to take charge in the final furlong but to the surprise of everyone, Mysore based Blazing Don came up with a stunning run and provided some tense moments to the winner. Jockey Jagadeesh who rode Blazing Don thought that he had pipped the front-runner on the post going by the excited manner in which he was his waving his stick in the air, not realising that Linette had already reached the safety of the winning post. Linette who has been pretty consistent, was strongly favoured to win though Steelium who had moved into this class with two wins to his credit, had his share of supporters. There was also some support for Splendid Smith and the unsound The Music Lover who was a surprise third in his last essay. Bottom-weigted Corsican Gal hit the front chased by Steelium, Splendid Smith, Linette and the rest. At the final turn, Corsican Gal weakened to make way for Steelium but his lead too was shortlived as Linette who was produced on the wide outside, quickened nicely to assume command. Just when Linette was poised to win with a measure of comfort came the spirited run of Blazing Don which lent some excitement to the proceedings, even throwing some into confusion into the minds of the supporters of the favourite because of the celebratory posture of jockey Jagadeesh on the runner-up. Seasoned contender Taurian who has dropped form, was third ahead of Splendid Smith. Eshwer's Diamond Hunter had recorded an impressive win over National Trust in good timing and on the evidence of that victory, he looked a cinch in the 1200 metres Bharachukki Plate but Ganapathy trained Celtic Princess attracted all the money as is the case always. In the event, Diamond Hunter won from end to end, without coming under any pressure from the runner up, in the manner of a horse which is expected to make swift progress on the handicap scale. This half-brother to Splash of Class surely belongs to the highest class. Srinath who drove out both the above mentioned winners, narrowly failed to win on Fort Knox who just about failed to collar High Tower who had the first run on the favourite. Fort Knox was denied of a clear run at a crucial stage of the race and though the daughter of Glory of Dancer finished full of running, the winning post came too soon for comfort. Black Cat was third . Make a note of Alejandros who was running after being gelded. He surely has the ability to do better than his performance thus far. Srinath who is going great runs, having confirmed his hold on the jockeys championship stakes, had another winner through Bountiful Heights who gave a drubbing to the opposition in the opening race of the day, in a race meant for three-year olds. With the opposition not showing fighting qualities, Bountiful Heights was only required to complete the formalities. When Master Strategist took charge in the final 300 metres, it looked as though he was capable of holding off favourite Generous Lad in another race meant for maiden three-year olds but the favourite responded well towards the concluding stages of the races and won quite capably. Big Thrillz was backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the 1200 metres Karwar Trophy but the four-year old son of Batzushka has always buckled close home after doing all the front running. Yet again, he faltered close home as Penny Tweedy showed the needed aggression to overhaul the front-running close home. With most of the runners in the fray being out for an airing and disinterested in the proceedings, Tough Love finally obliged at the expense of Continental Pearl and Candramala in the concluding race of the day.
