Alla Famiglia upsets

Alla Famiglia (Shahbuddin up), winner of the Varada Trophy, being led in by trainer Mr.R.R.Byramji

Rashid Byramji is slowly passing into the pages of history and his last few years have been eminently forgettable. Though he has the numbers, he does not have the wherewithal to make his presence felt in big races barring the odd occasion. The ageing trainer was recently honored by the Bangalore Turf Club for completing 50 years as a trainer but there was no hint of an imminent retirement. Though his success has dropped alarmingly and public esteem too is at low ebb, it is a pity that somebody like Byramji should hang on when he should be savoring his glorious achievements in a field now marked by intense competition. Be that as it may, Rashid Byramji trained Alla Famiglia recorded a win in the 1200 metres Varada Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 45, the main event of the small card of six events that was programmed for Friday. The son of Conquering Hero has been plagued by some problem or the other because he hasn’t obliged as a fancied runner. His last two wins have come against public expectations. Michael Eshwer trained Stilton went into the race as a cramped on-money favourite but then horses at such prices have rarely put their best foot forward. Alla Famiglia who was racing in the forward bunch, had the first run on his opponents and stayed put till crossing the winning post. Stilton was none too well placed at the final bend and though the son of Pennine Ridge was full of running at the finish in the hands of jockey Srinath, the favourite was not in a mood to oblige ending up second. Winds of Fire ran on to finish third ahead of Mount Royale. Padmanabhan’s Fantasy Moon had twice run poor races as a fancied runner and jockeys Ryan Marshall and Srinath, who rode this horse, had said that the filly was not genuine and unreliable. Assigned to Gnaneshwar this time out, Fantasy Moon moved into a striking second position from the outside draw and then stretched way in the final two furlongs, to record a facile win. Gem of a Lady was finishing on rather late for comfort while the well-backed World of Dreams could do no better than chase the eventual winner. Fancied Laughing Buddha packed up after being prominent into the straight. The trainer-jockey combination of Ganapathy and Prakash continued their winning ways, with a double. First-timer Our Warrior had no worthwhile opposition to take on in the March Plate (Div II) and won without being troubled by any of the runners. However, in the upper division, Right Again who enjoyed favouritism, surrendered timidly as jockey Srinath guided second favourite Game Fighter to a start to finish victory. Prakash put all that he had into making Right Again stretch out, but the son of Steinbeck turned out to be pretty ordinary. The double for Ganapathy and Prakash came through Regal Shot who proved too good, winning from Blairgowrie with a great deal of comfort. Regal Shot who hadn’t been given punishing runs earlier, readily obliged in the manner of a good type of a horse. In the day’s other action, Zareer Darashah’s Tropical Ridge brought off a big upset by staying doggedly in the front. Favourite Subaggregate had all the chances but lacked steam. Subaggregate is best left ignored because the four-year old gelding is sure to drown more money in the days to come.
