Trainer M B Mangalorkar, Mr & Mrs A K S Brar and Mr Jegbir Brar leading Conceptual (S John Up), winner of The Golconda St. Leger 2009 (Gr.2)

Madhav Mangalorkar trained Conceptual, sporting the colours of the Brars, cantered home an easy winner, in the Golconda St.leger, the last classic of the monsoon season at Hyderabad. Table Mountain showed the way to the half money stable mate, Conceptual, till the final bend, from where, the rider, S.John had to just niggle the progeny of Valid Concept and she responded beautifully to leave the field cold. Toofan Express just managed to peg back Table Mountain for the second place.

The supporting event of the day, the Melbourne Racing Club Trophy, had a more competitive field. Ganapathy trained Originality found favours in the betting ring, winding up at 10 to 8 on. The top weighted Aurora Aurealis set sails in front over the seven furlong trip. She was being followed by Walk in the Park, Clever Ploy, Originality, Sea Princess, Reflection of Gold and Dorabella, as they approached the distance marker. Imran was in full flow on Originality but she failed to accelerate, meanwhile Suraj had started to work his way on Sea Princess and finding her a bit lethargic, changed his whip to his left hand and two cracks were enough for the ‘Princess’ to quicken and win.

Deshmukh led in Vijaysarathi and Vijay’s Angel to add two more to his tally. Vijaysarathi claimed the Forest King Cup, the opening race of the day. Going into the lead early in the race, Vijaysarathi kicked on in the straight pushing back Stormy Gladiator’s challenge in the last 100 metres. The odds-on favourite Chameli was throughout in third position and never improved. Emerald Bay was permitted to be withdrawn on veterinary grounds.

Malcolm Kharadi had to give all he had up his sleeves on Vijay’s Angel, to get the better of Danzsingh, who had tried runaway tactics in the Red Satin Plate, run over 2200 metres.

Satheesh’s ward, Come Together, won the Police Cup in a close finish, the first four places covered within one length. Blazing Bounty had a lead of about three lengths, 100 metres from home. Come Together covered good ground under some hard riding to clinch the race close home although the saddle had slipped and Imran perching almost on the quarters of his mount. Sprucespringstien ran in late to finish a close second. Arrow of Light ended up fourth.

Navija, in a stunning upset won the field in the Faridoon.S.Chenoy Memorial Cup. Taking over the running near the distance post M.Mark rode out Navija to thwart the sluggish challenge of Indian Dancer. Rostock had to overcome traffic problems before finishing a close third ahead of the fast finishing Gables.

Easy Pride took over the running as the field entered the straight and kicked on gamely to win the lower division of the Bhagat Singh Plate. Turning Point was always in futile chase. Jay Jay was up in front but never improved from third position. There was a slight hold up before the race as Chimney began to throw tantrums and was ultimately withdrawn. Black Rose who was loaded, reared up, injuring the rider and was also withdrawn.

Golden Sabot caught up with the runaway leader, Armada, and beat him convincingly in the higher division. Cannon View appeared late to take the third spot.

Achiever lost out once again and this time to Tell me a Tale. Achiever and Kohinoor Aditi made a match race over the six furlongs trip with Kohinoor Aditi losing steam near the final bend. Achiever continued to kick on and was taken by surprise when Tell me a Tale raised a tremendous gallop in the last 100 metres to fly past and win the Kakinada Plate.
