ASTAIRE GIVES TRAINER KEVIN RYAN ANOTHER GIMCRACK
By Racing Correspondent | 24 Aug 2013 |
Intense Focus’s Astaire won the G2 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes at York on the final day of the Ebor Festival. For the trainer Kevin Ryan it was a back to back double in this race, having won on Blaine last year. After a good jump Astaire was very keen and jockey Neil Callan let him go to the front to lead, with about two furlongs left. Responding brilliantly to Callan’s urgings, Astaire quickened in fine fashion to thwart the late effort of Wilshire Boulevard and hit the wire a neck in front. Parbold closed in towards the closing stages to finish third, another neck away.
"This is a lovely horse, I won on him in his maiden here and I couldn’t praise him enough," said jockey Neil Callan. "You could see he had class that day, as he had to do it the hard way and make his own running. He was just going so well then and this was a copybook race. We were on unknown ground, but when I let him down two out he took two lengths out of them and that made the difference.”
"That final furlong looked like an extra five furlongs and I thought the line would never come,” said the winning trainer Kevin Ryan and added, "he will definitely go for the Middle Park now - it has to be a Group 1. They are all good horses who win the Gimcrack and it's very special to win this race."
