Forever Elegance makes it a no contes

Interestingly, in the history of the Indian Turf Invitation Cup weekend racing, trainers who have led in winners in the Sprinters Cup have not always emerged triumphant in the Stayers Cup in the same year. In 1998 Lyrical Bid and Moment of Glory provided trainer Padmanabhan the rare honour of being the first to train the country's fastest horse as well as the horse with the best stamina and the feat was emulated by Michael Eshwer four-years later with Bryce Canyon winning the Sprinters Cup and Bay of Angels taking the Stayers Cup. It was trainer Ganapathy's moment of glory on Saturday as he led in winners in both the events through Spectacular Quest and Forever Elegance respectively. Both these horses won their respective events, without raising a sweat, leaving the opposition legless. Jockey Prakash chose Forever Elegance ahead of stablemate Star of Windsor who had won this event last year and barring the odd occasions when he made the wrong choice in two Derbys, he has rarely met resistance from his owner-mates. As such, those who thought that Star of Windsor would trouble Forever Elegance were left to rue their decision as the latter won as she pleased, by a distance from Kolkata challenger Aperitivo. Quite a few horses came back in discomfort after the race and the pathetic manner in which most fared made on wonder whether the others in the fray had the wherewithal to be contesting the race. Moon Emperor set the requisite pace as the starter dispatched the field for the longest race of the season, with Forever Elegance comfortably settled in the rear group while Aperitivo and Star of Windsor were in about the fourth and fifth positions. Aperitivo took charge approaching the final bend, with Star of Windsor in striking position at the final bend even as Forever Elegance was smoothly improving her position. Aperitivo's lead did not last long as Forever Elegance came charging home and surged clear in the final furlong and was eased up in the final stages of the race to win by a over 10 lengths. Star of Windsor took the third position. The five-year old mare Forever Elegance was the horse of the season last winter, having a rich haul of wins including the success in the Gr.1 Poonawalla Bangalore Derby. The victory of Spectacular Quest and Forever Elegance in the Sprinters Cup and the Stayers Cup enabled their sire Placerville to join another stalwart of the Poonawalla Stud Farm who had winners in these events thorough Recardo and Calibre. Saturday's races were dominated by trainer Ganapathy as he saddled five winners, with jockey Prakash associated with three of them. Royal Attitude, Royal Falcon and Royal Recreation won their outings quite competently to provide reason to smile for the backers of the gold and brown brigade. Jockey Srinath too was in his elements, booting home a double through Habat and Perfectremembrance. The latter was hard-driven to get past Maharani to record her first win of her career as a five-year old. Almost all the winners of the nine-event card had no fight on their hands and one-sided contests did not make for exciting action in an eventful week like the Indian Turf Invitation Cup weekend racing. Racing also seems to be in need of some kind of a regulation like those in one-day cricket!
