McCullagh stops the juggernaut

The juggernaut was finally stopped. The 'fantasy ride' began with Spectacular Quest in the The Hindu Sprinters' Cup on Saturday. Dismissed at 7 to 1 in the belief that six furlongs may be a trifle short, Spectacular Quest, in the hands of Jockey Prakash, outpaced them all in the final 300 metres. Confidently supported at 13-10, Forever Elegance was the choice over another M A M Ramasway runner, Star Of Windsor in the 3000-meter Stayers' Cup. B Prakash let Forever Elegance race in mid-division, went in chase of Aperitivo turning for home and edged clear midstretch. Star Of Windsor quickened with 800 metres to go, engaged Aperitivo to a duel as they raced down the lane and could not sustain. Southern Empire was supported to the exclusion of the others in Sunday's Japan Cup. Jockey Prakash was away third in he five-horse field. Red Eagle assumed command as they went round the final turn but had no answer when Southern Empire came calling. Dr M A M Ramaswamy continued to be busy leading in his winners and attending the trophy prsentations. Though his Indian Derby defeat loomed large in the minds of many, the bookmakers would not budge from a 13-10 quote on the Ganapathy trainee, Mystical. Holding Court, second in Mumbai was a clear second choice. Flashing Star had support from knowledgeable quarters. Prakash and Mystical got a ground-saving trip, angled out with a little over 200 metres to go and got the better of Flashing Star, his stablemate. Flashing Star, Colm O'Donoghue up, raced close enough to the top albeit wide most of the way, hit the front midway down the lane and just failed to beat back Mystical's bid. Holding Court sat third and on the inside, flattered briefly as the race took a serious turn and could not keep up with the top two. " I was not concerned. When Flashing Star took the lead, I knew I had enough to win," Prakash said in response to Cyrus Madan's question whether he thought the winning post would come too soon when he shot out of the pocket in the stretch. It was left to Amazing Power and jockey McCullagh to come up with a telling burst in the final 100 meters to win in a photo over Southern Regent in the P K Mehra Super Mile and crash the MAM-Ganapathy-Prakash party. Amazing Power let the front horses sort themselves out, took dead aim on Southern Regent to blot the 'Ramaswamy copybook.' It was a great weekend of racing. The Bangalore Turf Club needs to be commended and I enjoyed every moment of it.
