Trainer Vishal Yadav leading Demanding Format (Arshad Alam Up), winner of The Hotel R R R Trophy

Vishal Yadav trained Demanding Format (Hymn-Flaming Bay)was ridden tactfully by young Arshad Alam to lift the Hotel R.R.R.Trophy which featured the day’s card at Mysore. It was the seventh win for this Mysore based mare from 41 runs. Six of them incidentally have been Trophy races. She had ventured out of Mysore only once but without success. Jersey Girl, the winner of the Bangalore 1000 Guineas received strong support, being sent in as the favourite. Raphire was second in demand while Demanding Format was at a liberal quote of 6-1. Bucethalis, Askhan and Atlas Power raced together in front for most part of the seven furlongs distance with Raphire and Jersey Girl following them closely. Demanding Format was always on the haunches of Jersey Girl and never budged away from that till the field came in for the home run. On top of the straight Jersey Girl was looking for a run between horses in front and Arshad Alam on Demanding Format found the inner path opening up and swiftly went for it. Demanding Format was quickly in the lead and kicked on gamely till the winning post. Some precious time was lost for Jersey Girl on top of the straight in looking for an opening and despite her late effort, fell short by three parts of a length at the finish. Ashkan was a long way back third while Raphire which was a spent force even before the race got to a boil finished fourth.

The biggest upset of the day was Ranjeet Shinde trained Getafix (Black Cash-Czarina) in the Chief Minister’s Cup Division I, paying a whopping Rs.577 for a tanner. Getafix, a fancied runner in its previous outing just about ten days ago was neglected in the betting after its debacle. Jumping out smartly, Getafix hit the front at start and was on a start to finish mission. In the final two furlongs Getafix kicked on gamely to extend the lead to three lengths at the finish. Nocturnal Hunter chased Getafix all the way from the start and eventually finished second. Red Admiral and Bella Pinky finished third and fourth respectively.

Irfan Ghatala schooled Ace Badran (Rebuttal-Badraan) paid tributes to its sire by scoring a maiden win in the Original Vel B.Ashok Kumar Memorial Cup. Ace Badraan went into the race at an unbackable price of 10-3 ‘on’. The 3 year old gelding beat Mannat by a mere ‘short neck’ but the manner in which he won was more comfortable than the verdict suggests. Mannat and Glycys Bay disputed the lead from the start and they had come away from the rest by about five lengths as they turned for home. Ace Badran, racing towards the rear till then, gradually crept up to be third, rounding the turn. Inside the last 300 metres Mannat had forged ahead and Ace Badraan made an effortless move to get alongside. Jockey Suraj Narredu handled Ace Badraan deftly to have an upper hand over Mannat throughout the last furlong without being extended. Glycys Bay was third, many lengths behind.

M.Bobby’s Crrisp (Warrshan-Secret Miracle) scored an encore under Saddam Hussain in the Udhagamandalam Cup. After a speedy start, Crrisp settled well in third position while the lead changed between Huckleberry Finn and Born For Beauty. As they traversed the final bend, Crrisp rushed forward quickly to regain the lead and was never in any sort of bother thereafter. Huckleberry Finn, Wynn and April Showers filled the frame in that order.

T.Natraj trained Speartooth (Chatham Straight-Winning Talk) justified the short price by winning the Belur Plate from start to finish. Speartooth had finished in the ‘money’ in its three outings and was sent in at 10-7 ‘on’. Jockey D.Gnaneshwar took Speartooth to the front at start and raced close to the fence all the way. Not finding any worthy challenger on the home stretch, Speartooth drew clear to win by five lengths. Black Dragon beat the rest to finish as the runner-up. Mother Ewa ended up a close third.

Another Mysore based youngster, Always Love (Black Cash-Zariyba) from the stables of C.D.Monnappa opened its account in the opener, the Bharachukki Plate. Always Love scored an upset win over the favourite Fioritta. The second in demand Super Silver set out in front to be joined by Fioritta, which moved well from an outer draw. The two broke away from the rest by over five lengths as they passed the half way mark. Inside the last 300 metres the favourite Fioritta surged forward to take control and was looking good when Always Love bridged the gap with a rapid dash and flashed past the leader in front of the grand stand. Super Silver finished third. Youre A Star was a non starter in the race.

Second in demand Amazon Bay (Placerville-Lombardia) from G.Nityanand’s yard made every post a winning one in the lower division of the Chief Minister’s Cup, the concluding race of the day. Winless from 14 starts, Amazon Bay showed plenty of speed as the gates opened and rushed to the front to take up the running. Entering the final straight Amazon Bay stepped up the pace to open a gap of over three lengths over the nearest horse. President’s Rule was urged strongly all through the last 400 metres with the rider using his stick freely but he could only manage to finish second. The Jaguar took the shortest way to finish third. The favourite Jerusalem ran erratic under pressure on the straight and ended up a tame fourth.
