Trainer L.V.R.Deshmukh leading Plenipotent (P.S.Chouhan Up), winner of The Police Cup

L.V.R.Deshmukh trained Plenipotent (Iffraaj-Beldon Hill) won the Police Cup, a seven furlongs trip for horses in the highest category, which was the highlight of the small card of six races that were run at Hyderabad on Sunday. Six horses lined up for the start. As the gates opened, Toli Toli Toli was planted at gates while Cristiano lost about three lengths. Young Soldier went to the front, followed closely by Plenipotent and Golden Queen. As they came into the home stretch, Young Soldier started to tire out quickly and was passed by Golden Queen and Plenipotent together. The two galloped together for a short while and Deshmukh’s ward forged ahead smoothly when jockey P.S.Chouhan released the brakes, to win by almost five lengths. Young Soldier was third about two lengths behind Golden Queen.

R.H.Sequeira trained Olive (Don Micheletto-Super Swift) scored the biggest upset of the day in the Faridoon S. Chenoy Memorial Cup to give apprentice B.H.Prashant his first win. The 4 year old filly jumped out smartly from the gates and went ahead to lead the field. Staying the Best, which was in chase right from the beginning, started to close up with a strong challenge inside the last 300 metres but just couldn’t get past the relentless Olive. The favourite Handsome Hunk started to gain momentum inside the last 150 metres and came up menacingly but failed to collar Olive by quarter of a length. Staying The Best finished third, a length away.

Transition (Hurricane Centre-Wingnaprayer) from the stables of  K.Satheesh scored an encore in the Red Chieftan Cup. Showing plenty of speed, Transition headed to lead the field and made every post a winning one in the 5 1/2 furlongs dash. Sheridan chased the leader about three lengths adrift till the last 300 metres and failed to quicken. Racing Queen improved towards the rails to finish second in front of Sheridan.

Max Baby (Epicentre-Cornelia) from S.S.Faisal Hassan’s yard has hit a purple patch as a six year old. The mare completed a hat-trick in the Makalu Plate. Young Akshay Kumar who has started his career this season on a great note was astride Max Baby on all the three wins. Sporting Star cut the pace early with Max Baby in chase and Kathakali in third. Kathakali showed some urgency passing the 1000 metres and moved to be second. Inside the last 400 metres Max Baby moved right to take the shortest route and went past Sporting Star with ease. All The Fun rallied late to beat stable companion Sporting Star for the second place in the shadow of the winning post. Midnight Beauty was withdrawn before the race.

Trainer Faisal Hassan was the only professional to score a double on the day. The first win came through Flower Drum (Juniper-Brazilia) in the opener, the lower division of the Mount Everest Plate. The 4 year old filly which was winless from eleven runs was ridden to an upset win by M.Mark. The speedy Dazzling Princess called the shots, followed closely by Hard Hit, Break Away, Flower Drum and the rest behind. Nearing the distance post Flower Drum suddenly got into a resolute gallop and swept past the front runners. Hard Hit, Kohinoor Adhira and Dazzling Princess filled the frame in that order.

L.D’Silva trained Icelandic (Oratorio-Concept) earned its maiden win in the higher division, the concluding race of the day. Sent into the race as the first favourite, Icelandic rallied strongly inside the last 100 metres to register its first win. Nano Tribute was on a start to finish mission, being joined by Homely Helo near the distance post. Icelandic was being urged by apprentice P.Sai Kumar on the outside. Icelandic picked up speed inside the last 100 metres and surged forward. Cypress Way came in late from the rear to finish second. Baba’s Gift also rallied in late to beat Nano’s Tribute for the third place.
