Criquette Head-Maarek trained Treve lifted the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, Paris on Sunday. The unbeaten filly owned by Qatar's Sheikh Joann bin Hamad al Thani was only in her fifth start of her career. Jockey Thierry Jarnet was given the charge of guiding the filly’s fortunes after Frankie Dettori, who was supposed to ride, suffered an ankle fracture at Nottingham on Wednesday.
Sent in as the second favourite at 9-2, Treve was ridden wide with the last four early, while Penglai Pavilion, Joshua Tree and Intello disputed the lead. Treve picked on the runners in front with effortless ease to hit the front on the home turn and stretched out like a champion to win by five lengths. The Japanese hope Orfevre which was the race favourite finished second. A ‘neck’ behind in third was the French Derby winner Intello.
"The way she has won is absolutely brilliant," said the winning trainer Head-Maarek and added, “She didn’t have the best of races and had to race on the outside the whole way but when horses are good, numbers at the start and the ground make no difference. I have been lucky to have trained some great fillies, but she is the best I have had by far. I had been thinking of retiring, but not now for sure”.
