By Racing Correspondent | 01 Nov 2013 |
Goldencents (R Bejarano Up), winner of The Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (Gr.1)
Doug F O’Neill trained Goldencents was ridden to a pillar to post victory by Rafael Bejarno in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. The winner of the Santa Anita Derby broke away from the wide draw and set a fast pace clocking 22 seconds for the first quarter mile and 44.75 secs. for half mile which is a record of sorts for the Dirt Mile. Jockey Bejarano kept the pressing Goldencents from halfway to keep up the pace. Golden Ticket raised some hopes after the bend, covering some ground but Goldencents ran on strongly despite lugging right in the final furlong,to stay ahead by 2 ¾ lengths. Brujo De Olleros was third another 3 ½ lengths away.
“I felt like you can have a few mishaps in the Mile and still win. We just feel so blessed and hopefully this horse can be around for a couple of years,” said the winning trainer O’Neill.
