Beholder (Gary Stevens Up), winner of The Breeders' Cup Distaff (Gr.1)
Beholder lifted the G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita in a very impressive fashion. Richard E Mandella trained Beholder was coming into this race after its recent success in the G1 Zenyata Stakes. Royal Delta, the winner of this race for the last two years was the favourite among the six that lined up for the start. Beholder was the third choice at 5-2 with Princess of Sylmar being the second in demand.
Authenticity hit the front early, closely tracked by Royal Delta. Beholder was never far off from the leader. Royal Delta packed up at halfway stage and dropped out of contention. Beholder moved closer to Authenticity and as they turned for home the bay filly got to the lead and stretched out effortlessly, pulling away from the rest without the rider Gary Stevens not having to move a limb. Close Hatches chased the winner over the last furlong to finish second. Authenticity was third while Royal Delta was a disappointing fourth.
“She was a little fractious going into the gate and a little anxious”, said Gary Stevens riding his first Breeders' Cup successt. “I was afraid she might over-break but she settled and broke beautiful. This is the best race she’s ever run. I was hoping that Authenticity would carry the lead a little farther but Beholder moved up nice, went by her easy and the really opened up”, he added.
