Yana (Daniel Grant Up), winner of The Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Eclipse Stakes of India (Gr.2)

Yana (Razeen – Zaya), owned by Jaydev Mody won the Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Eclipse Stakes of India (Gr2) convincingly and resurrected her reputation. Daniel Grant chose to wait on her all through the journey and unleashed Yana only past the 400-metre marker. The mare readily surged ahead and the speed with which she shot into the lead was blinding, leaving no chance to the likes of even Diego Rivera to make a race of it. Both Yana and Diego Rivera were racing in the rear all the way until the homestretch. Angelique came alongside Yana briefly but was easily outpaced and outlasted. Yana ran true to form and showed that she is in the best of form. Swahili (Alnasr Alwasheek – Singita), the joint property of the Jains and the Patels, won the Lufthansa Cup from the word go. Dancing Glory, her main rival, was at the rear end of the field along with Recardo. As they turned for home, Swahili quickened well and Recardo never looked threatening. Dancing Glory came up with a lively challenge and the pair tore away from the pack. The last furlong was a stride for stride dual and in the dying moments, Swahili held on gamely to spare half a length to Dancing Glory. Elmwood (Glory of Dancer – Baloustar) sprung a surprise and a neat one at that! Entering the straight last of all, Elmwood warmed up midway up the straight even as Red Indian and Czar Alexander were engaged in a close fight. Ming was thereabouts but not finding his feet. Call To Arms warmed up too late in the day to make any impression but covered ground to end a close fourth. Elmwood was the best finisher and once he came to the forefront he left no chance whatsoever to any in the fray to easily pass them all and come home alone. Captain Smart (Case Law – Afshaan) won the Mercedes Trophy. Going start to finish, the Captain took charge early and led the field home. Into the straight, he got stronger towards the final furlong and though Trigance tried hard to catch up, Captain Zone bounded homeward with zest to post a comfortable victory. Trigance did well to ward off Great White for the runner up berth. Surmount (Diffident – Angel Guardian) took a brilliant start and then raced in the front bunch. In the straight, Surmount soon took charge and shook off a persistent Classic Spirit and surged ahead. The favourite Mysterious Heights looked helpless unable to quicken. King of the Ring came up with a late challenge as did Courage Under Fire but both the challengers had to be content with the minor placing. Aristoratic (China Visit – Adored) won handsomely justifying the heavy support he received. Taking a good jump Aristocratic settled into the third letting Numismatic dictate terms until the homestretch. Adriana and River Blitz galloped alongside. Midway up the straight, Aristocratic lit up and slipped from the rails to readily zip into the front and win drawing away. Confiserie came from a long way back to catch the eye while hitting the place money. Hi Dolly (Warrshan – Shirley Valentine) put in a splendid last stretch run to force a victory getting past long time leader Upnorth in the final furlong. Hi Dolly was not in the best of positions initially and jockey Neeraj Rawal had to goad her all the way. Upnorth easily passed Paper King, who was right in the front. However, Midnight Club and Hi Dolly moved forward together to challenge the leader with Hi Dolly galloping resolutely to finish with a winning gallop. Earlier in the day, the well-backed Clas (Glory of Dancer – Classic Statement) was given a run for the money by Amaranza who fought till the end only to lose by a neck. Racing in third till the turn, Clas was put into top gear by Neeraj Rawal and shot ahead near the 300m mark. Amaranza, who was on the rails, was shifted out and began to mount a serious challenge. The pair fought out the final 100 meters and Class just managed to thwart the challenger and post a well-deserved victory. Caramel (Warrshan – Peperoni) thundered in the last few meters to spoil the party for Walking Tall who led all the way and looked like just pulling it off. No where in the picture till the distance post, Caramel shot on to the scene barely 100 meters from the winning post and surged past Walking Tall a stride before the post. Bonny Light too ran a good race to finish alongside as did Stud of Gold. Among the professionals, trainers Bezan Chinoy and Hormuz Antia saddled a double each, while Neeraj Rawal was the lone jockey to do so.
