ZOOM ZOOM WINS THE GREATER MUMBAI POLICE TROPHY

By Mahendra Mallya | 16 Jan 2014 | MUMBAI

Mr Prashant Nagar receiving The Greater Mumbai Police Trophy from Dr Satyapal Singh, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Mumbai

The ten-race card framed for Thursday's Mumbai races saw the races proportionately shared as not a single pro scored more than once. Each race saw a different combination come to the fore which is not a frequent pattern for such a big card. Some hot favourites too let down a large following, and nearly half a dozen runners returned with broken blood vessels. The highlight of the day was The Greater Mumbai Police Trophy, and the distinguished guest of the RWITC was Dr Satyapal Singh, IPS, the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai.

MK Jadhav-schooled Zoom Zoom (Diffident - Raptures), ably ridden by A Sandesh, could not have timed his run better and managed to dampen the winning aspirations of Sherlock Holmes, who until the last stride looked menacing. Relic Hunter showed a lot more spunk than he has lately, when he took off at a good nip and stayed well ahead of the others. Dreamliner was in second, with Sherlock Holmes close behind, followed by Ice Skater, Zoom Zoom, Edit Piaf and Que Sera Sera were heading the rest.

Relic Hunter enjoyed his moment in the sun until the final furlong when Sherlock Holmes started to loom large. While Sherlock Holmes eased past the leader to take charge, Sandesh got busy working on Zoom Zoom. He had just about a furlong to make up a couple of lengths that Sherlock Holmes had stolen. Sandesh got the best out of Zoom Zoom who started to gain on Sherlock Holmes. With less than 100m to go, it was certain that a photo-finish was brewing. The pair battled hard and Zoom Zoom just managed to pip Sherlock Holmes with a bob of the head. Relic Hunter ended a good third, and with a furlong less could have proved handy. Que Sera Sera ended a quiet fourth without troubling those in front of him.

Dr Vijay Mallya's Silver Streak (Verglas - Optimal) was given a peach of a ride by stable jockey P Trevor who did all the right things to carve out a fourth career win for the Dallas Todywalla trainee. Trevor was quick to settle into a vantage position on start and was in the prominent second behind leader Myla Rose all the way into the straight. Indian Touch was close behind with Remember Me, Song Dynasty and Halle running together. Neath was the last to turn for home, but right with the bunch.

Myla Rose was off the bridle soon on turning for home. Silver Streak was travelling well and started to nudge out Myla Rose without burning much. Silver Streak soon sailed into the lead and Trevor still had a lot under him. He rode out confidently, and although Indian Touch and Remember Me were snapping at his tail, he never looked in danger of being caught up with. Silver Streak galloped gracefully to win by just under two lengths without being fully extended and clocked a fast timing (1:23:64) doing so. In this kind of form, Silver Streak can add to his tally this season.

Indian Touch and Remember Me ended together a short-head between them on the wire. Neath picked up late in the race and did reasonably well to end in the frame.

Cyclops (Sedgefield - Star Alydar) finally entered the winner's circle after some consistent performances without luck. Jockey Kavraj Singh had his work cut out and he returned with a high score. He worked his way to the leaders after settling into the mid-bunch once they entered the homestretch. By then Summer Eclipse had gotten past long time leader Allegiance and scaled up a handy lead. Highlander had a lot of work to do in the straight. He had not been the quickest out and was one of the last ones into the stretch.

Cyclops started to devour ground with about 300 to go and Summer Eclipse could not put up any stiff resistance. Cyclops looked good inside the final furlong, and although Highlander covered a lot of ground briskly, Kavraj had established a handy lead and had it covered long way from the winning post.

Armel (Diffident – Sensuality) followed the favourite Jen’s Glory into the straight and immediately took the running and just managed to win in spite of the Jockey losing his whip at the 150 meter mark. Double Or Quits who was second in demand was forced to travel wide around the bend and had too much to make up for in the straight and lost by a whisker. Trainer H J Antia notched up another with his own riders doing a fine job in the saddle. EYE OF THE STORM was the first Bleeder on a day of one too many.

Kazuri (Glory of Dancer – Dynasty), the on money favourite finally won her maiden victory in the hands of stable jockey S. Zervan. The full sister to Amistad (miler) was in the front bunch following Locarno. The filly cruised away to an easy three-and-a-quarter-length win which looked impressive only because of the company--which were all first timers. The one who impressed in this race was the Imtiaz Sait trained filly Simply Sweet who seemed to extend well in the final furlong.

Nush (High Chaparral – Dance With Style) the second favourite and bottom weight won quite comfortably from Celtic King although the latter took the winner to the Stewards’ room to win the race back. Both were sitting behind, but bunched up with the field. Favourite Knight Of Ke and Home Advantage bled.

Dixie Delight (Sedgefield – Dixie Dahlin) finally broke her maiden status by beating the inexperienced favourite Gran Turismo and Danse Debonaire in the shortest of verdicts. Ably ridden by C S Jodha, who settled her in mid bunch, DixieDelight went a bit too wide in the straight, but eventually held on from a late finishing Gran Turismo. Another of Sedgfield’s progenies thus won over a longer trip. Mufasa, the 2nd favourite, was withdrawn at the gates for splaying his for shoe.

Nirbhaya (Mull of Kintyre – Classical Elegance) also broke her maiden ranks by winning this race as favourite sitting in a handy forward position. She was ridden by S Mosin, and the addition of blinkers seemed to the trick for her in this race. Star Zone, second in demand, lived up to its place in the betting.

Zenofic (Chevalier – Marquisa), half sister to Maximus (Royal Kingdom – Marquisa), showed that she is a filly to look forward to for the future as she won her maiden start following in the footsteps of her brother and also giving first season stallion Chevalier a much needed victory in Western India. Sitting in mid bunch, the petite filly galloped in amazing fashion, decimating the opposition. However, she did run green and gave retained jockey R. Woodworth his second win of the season.

Pezzonovante (Oath – Starynessey), who had last won in December 2012, won again in a start to finish manner. Favourite Sultan of Swing was in a good position, but couldn’t cover the 3 1/2 lengths that separated them at the post. Balinga ran a notable fourth.
