GREEK GOD MAKES AN IMPRESSIVE WINNING DEBUT

By Mahendra Mallya | 13 Feb 2014 | MUMBAI

Trainer Dallas Todywalla leading Greek God (A Sandesh Up), winner of The A.F.S. Talyarkhan Trophy

Dallas Todywalla trained Greek God (Chevalier – Pas de l’Argent) had a memorable debut and he looked the part in the paddock as well. However, he was second in demand after Zervan-ridden Fribourg hogged maximum attention in the betting ring.

As the gates flung open, the first two favourites, Fribourg and Greek God got off to a quick start and after a brief tussle, Greek God settled to lead the field to Fribourg, with Ukulele, Smart Raider, Lhoste and Leothefiercehorse in a huddle, while Reality was detached last.

Greek God surged ahead and stole a march soon on turning for home. He got into a fine rhythm and started to draw away from his rivals. Fribourg tried hard to cover the deficit, but simply could not match up to the brilliance of Greek God who won handsomely. Fribourg ended up chasing the winner. Greek God was far too superior on the day. Fribourg was clearly out-paced, but this run should prove beneficial. Lhoste ended well ahead of Ukulele to fill the frame.

Imtiaz Sait’s Remember Me (Ikhtyar – Enaski) produced a blistering run to stage a game challenge from the rear to collar the fighting bunch in the final furlong of the Oyster Cove Trophy. Step Up did most of the front running with Myla Rose in tow. Mountbatten, Celtic King, and Remember Me followed the pair close behind.

Myla Rose took over from a fighting Step Up in the straight. Soon Celtic King and Mountbatten started gaining on the pair in front. Remember Me tried to poke through between horses, but Dashrath Singh was quick to realize that it was safer to move from the outside. He made a quick switch and Remember Me responded gamely to zip past them all and score an emphatic victory, beating Mountbatten and Celtic King convincingly.

It was a day of fancied horses scoring in most races and the trend was set in the day’s first race itself by Sun Hot (Mull of Kintyre – Secret Charm).

Plan B led the field homeward but soon had Sun Hot breathing down his neck. Prince was trying to find his footing too galloping in the vicinity and sticking close behind this pair. However, in the final furlong, jockey P Trevor goaded Sun Hot away from the chasers and galloped away to notch up a comfortable win. Plan B held on the second spot while Prince who could have done better, ended third.

Jockey P Trevor later partnered Swashbuckler (Razeen – Exquisite) to a thundering win edging out a determined effort from his closest rival, Snowing. The battle started soon after Mufasa surrendered his lead to Snowing. Janis Jay too looked striking as he progressed from the inside of Snowing. Swashbuckler was looming large on the outside and the trio was engaged in a grim battle. Trevor rode hard to steer Swashbuckler ahead in the last 100 meters, after some rough jostling. Swashbuckler finished on best to beat Snowing and Janis Jay by a narrow margin.

War Horse (Razeen – Margarita Rita) compiled an expected victory at cramped odds. Though the margin of victory was short, he never looked in trouble. Hills And Heights took off to build a handy lead once into the straight and was shaping well when Celsius started to accelerate. War Horse was lagging by more than two lengths approaching the distance post. Hills And Heights was soon joined by Celsius with War Horse too gaining considerable ground. Celsius and War Horse matched strides for a few meters before Sandeep and War Horse made a powerful surge to land the spoils.

Sky Lantern (Sedgefield – Precision) trained by Ivor Fernandes scored a facile victory to win the 2000 meters Great Investment Plate without encountering any resistance. The Other Song and Double or Quits garnered most of the betting which fetched great returns for investments on Sky Lantern (8/1).

Zafira darted into the lead soon on start and Sky Lantern settled close behind the leader. The rest followed more than five lengths away. They galloped at a steady pace and at 800, Zafira and Sky Lantern were well ahead of the rest.

Zafira entered the straight with Sky Lantern gaining on her. Within a few strides, Sky Lantern shot ahead and amassed a huge lead. Double or Quits and company were caught napping as Sky Lantern gallop out of range to score a facile victory leaving no chance for any of her rivals to even think about victory. Sky Lantern posted an impressive victory sparing seven-and-half lengths to Double or Quits. Tara snatched the third spot from The Other Song.

Wasabi (Ace – Raptures) was a rage in the betting ring and she obliged a large following without causing any anxiety. Gran Amigo strode out in front in the straight and had a useful lead with about 300 to go. Wasabi improved from fourth at the bend to one behind Gran Amigo. Speed Baby too was progressing well. In the final furlong though, Wasabi picked up momentum and bounded forward to leave them all behind in a matter of strides. She swept past Gran Amigo to score a well deserved and long due maiden win in style. Gran Amigo ran a go d second while Speed Baby did enough to ensure place money. Arabian Lord covered good ground and did well to finish a close fourth.

Tammy O (Tamayuz – Ooh Aah Camera) was the shortest priced favourite on the day and she did a fine job bringing up her first victory in her second outing.

Settling into the third spot until the turn, Tammy O with Sandesh astride marched ahead soon on turning for home. Once she surged into the lead, it was curtains for her rivals. Tammy O was simply too good for them all and she galloped all alone in front to pile up a massive lead in a matter of split seconds. She was away and clear of the rest and won pulling up. Rocky Balboa was the best of the beaten lot in finishing second. Golden Spurs ran on to take the place money ahead of Priceless Love.

For the professionals, trainer Dallas Todywalla saddled a double, while jockeys A Sandesh and P Trevor scored a double each.
