Trainer Shamsuddin leading Power Planet (J H Christopher Up), winner of The Circar Cup

Shamsuddin trained Power Planet (Epicentre-Classic Award) pulled off a stunning upset with a pillar to post victory in the Circar Cup, the first race of the day. Racing Ahead was the ‘money back’ favourite among the five in the field, while Power Planet whose last win was exactly a year ago was at longer odds. Jockey J.H.Christopher who had started to add up to his winners list which was dormant for some time, at Bangalore and Mysore in recent weeks took Power Planet to the lead as the gates opened. Rustic Gal was a close second along the fence while Racing Ahead ranged alongside. Into the last 400 metres Racing Ahead began to move up steadily and at one stage it looked like the favourite would forge ahead with ease but Christopher kept riding out Power Planet and the 5 year old kicked on gamely to hold on by half a length at the finish. Rustic Gal was third.

L.V.D.Deshmukh schooled Vijay Vidyut (Hurricane Run-Ravana) scored its maiden win in fine fashion in the Mother’s Boy Plate, a mile trip for 3 year old maiden horses. Ivanova set the pace from the word ‘go’ with Vijay Vidyut racing a handy second. As the came in for the final two furlongs, Vijay Vidyut moved alongside Ivanova and the two fought a fierce battle for about half a furlong before Vijay Vidyut surged forward under Kuldeep Singh. Upon A Star and Vijay Vaishnavee finished third and fourth respectively, in a close finish.

Deshmukh and Kuldeep Singh combination pulled off a double with Vijays Triumph in the division I of the Columbia Plate. Vijays Triumph .(Glory of Dancer-Sonatina), a consistent performer having finished off the board only once in nine starts raised a robust gallop in the last 100 metres of the sprint. The favourite Dandelion set out on a start to finish bid and came in clear as they approached the distance post. Dandelion suddenly began to lose steam and three horses, Aware along the rails, Vijays Triumph in the centre and Shimmering Ice from the outside came tearing down. Vijays Triumph travelled the best to win by three parts of a length. Aware finished second, a ‘neck’ ahead of Shimmering Ice. Equalizer finished fourth while the favourite Dandelion could not find a place in the judge’s frame.

Trainer Laxman Singh and jockey A.M.Tograllu continued their successful run with a double through Homely Helo and Noble Citizen.

Homely Helo (Diffident-Girl From Ascot) scored yet another start to finish victory in the lower division of the Patron’s Cup. The 6 year old started to increase the lead with jockey T.M.Tograllu not having to work extra and was eased up well before the winning post. True Scholar tracked in second all through the straight. Golden Adagio and In Reality finished third and fourth respectively.

Noble Citizen (Epicentre-On The Cruise) scored a runaway win in the Grace And Strength Plate. Smartest out from draw 12, Noble Citizen headed to the rails to lead the field. Showing up first on the home stretch, the 4 year old stretched out easily under A.M.Tograllu to justify the favouritism. The second in demand Spirited chased Noble Citizen to finish second. Shades of Victory and Sterling Finish filled the frame in that order.

Jockey J.H.Christopher rode a double for trainer Shamsuddin. Lady of Grace (Mr.Mellon-Amplitude) whose only win was a year ago was sent in as the favourite at 2-1 against its thirteen opponents in the division I of the Republican Plate. Inside the last 400 metres the ‘Lady’ responded brilliantly to Christopher’s urgings and galloped fluently to draw awy from the rest. Kathakali, Silver Arnage and Salvadore filled the judge’s frame in that order.

Shehzad Abbas’s youngster Velerian Steel (Yeats-Nan Scurry) made an impressive debut in the lower division of the Prince Khartoum Plate. The gelding raced in about sixth position till approaching the last 600 metres. Improving steadily around the field Velerian Steel came up with a strong challenge with jockey Ch.K.Chary riding out. C Eleven slipped in along the shortest way and tried to challenge but could not match the strides of Valerian Steel. Sunday Beauty warmed up late to take the second place ahead of C Eleven.

K.S.V.Prasad Raju trained Staying The Best (Burden of Proof-My Hansel) having found one better in its previous two starts did well to justify the short price in the lower division of the Columbia Plate. Tracking the early leader Deal Maker till passing the 400 metres board, Staying The Best surged ahead with ease and ran true to its name under Nilesh Rawal. Ancillary got the better of Deal Maker in the closing stages to be the runner-up.

True haven started to get stronger with apprentice Ajit Singh pushing the filly vigorously in the last furlong and bridging the gap steadily forged ahead in the dying moments of the race.
