Sheikh Mohammed and Sheikh Hamdan leading African Story (Silvestre De Souza Up), winner of The Dubai World Cup Gr.1

African Story crafted a sensational win in the richest race of the world, the Dubai World Cup at the Meydan race track. The 7 year old son of Pivotal, piloted by Silvestre de Souza bombarded the packed field of sixteen thoroughbreds from across the globe to stop the clock at 2:01:61, a new track record on this track. It was the seventh triumph in the race for the ‘Blue’ silks of the Godolphin stables. This was also the sixth success for trainer Saeed Bin Suroor.

Fifth in race last year, African Story settled well to track the leader Mukhadram along the rails. African Story and Silvestre de Souza shifted out at the top of the straight to tackle the leader and with a blistering gallop sped past to score by a clear 2 3/4 lengths. Mukhadram held on to the second spot while Cat O’Montain ran on from the rear to be third.

"I have won the Dubai World Cup five times in the past, with stars like Dubai Millennium and Street Cry but this victory has come after a gap of eight years," said the winning trainer Saeed Bin Suroor. "It is a long time and there has been a lot of pressure, with people asking why I have not won the race for so long. The reason was we did not have the right horse to win it.”

"Thank God, finally, we found a horse for the Dubai World Cup," he added.
