Jockey Niall McCullagh stole the limelight at the Mumbai races on Thursday. The veteran jockey displayed scintillating form and rode four winners including the record-breaking ride astride Set Alight in the RR Ruia Gold Cup. Moonstorm (Black Cash – Millywakay) was his first winner for the day. The Vinayak trained was heading the second bunch of horses till the turn. As the heads turned for home, Sepia Tone, Wild Torronaado and Blue Daffodils were disputing the lead. Rubidium and Blazing Speed were warming up to the task when Moonstorm came to the scene with telling strides. MuCullagh shifted Moonstorm to top gear and drew away from the bunch in front without trouble, and when Rubidium made a late dash McCullagh had ensured that he would not have any last meet shock to contend with. Blazing Speed ended a good third. Raquel (Black Cash – Ravij) was the second victory steered by McCullagh in the very next race. Sitting in the rear, McCullagh pounced on the front runners nearing the distance post and marched away to post a facile victory. Mysterious Star was fighting hard to stave off the challenge from Prince Lochinva when Raquel came with a fiery gallop to put the issue beyond doubt. Tigress Noire was caught between horses and had to be checked just when she was about to quicken. That set her back but she ended just off the frame in a close huddle for the minor placing. Balance De Power was bridging the gap far too late and probable needed more ground. Over an extended trip, Balance De Power will do better. IL Divo (Orpen - Porto Leounda) provided McCullagh with a fantastic hattrick. Chasing the leader Ekhabinskya till into the straight, IL Divo finished on full of running and once he passed the leader, IL Divo was in complete command. Cyclades improved to finish runner up beating Ekhabinskya while Swept Away made no impression on the top three in ending in the judge’s frame. Amore Mio (Razeen – Forest Treasure) made a splendid and promising debut. Neeraj Rawal did not hurry with Amore Mio and settled backwards from the outside draw. Amore Mio was quite a distance behind from the action in front but once into the straight, showed surprising maturity while tackling the leaders who had built a handy lead. Hereafter who was tracking Bright Future all the way, pulled away nearing the distance post and appeared to have the race sewn up but had not reckoned the forceful finishing burst Amore Mio was capable of unleashing. Amore Mio was all lit up and in the final furlong literally flew past Hereafter indicating that he has a great potential. Amore Mio is well built and looks strong and showcased good speed and looks good for longer distance as well. Hereafter was clearly overwhelmed in the last furlong but he looked good too. Blumarine came from a long way back to finish an eye-catching third. Ivor Fernandes trained Fire Spirit (Tomba – Polistatic) looked a picture in the paddock. Travelling close to the rails, Free Spirit chased the front group comprising Ratnavali, Mister Fixit, Nuncio and Amadomio. Ratnavali had a handy lead entering the straight, however, in the final furlong Free Spirit was dominant and easily passed Ratnavali who offered no fight and tamely surrendered. Even Mister Fixit was able to pass her to grab the second spot. Game of Talent came from a long way back to end in the frame. Imperio (Senure – Worthwhile) was the on money favourite and justified the cramped odds by winning readily with a measure of comfort. Racing close behind Ran Banka the leader, Imperio challenged the leader approaching the distance post. Imperio gathered momentum at a briskrate and encountered no threat form any rival. Imperio won handsomely and may even repeat this performance. River Tern ended second, though she took a while to pass Ran Banka, but when she did, she stretched further away. Hidden Dragon (Diffident – Aladancer) belied his age and took on a lot younger lot yet prevailed with a gutsy fight. Notable Runner led them homewards and kicked on for a noteable while before being poutpaced by Hidden Dragon. Favourite Needforspeed was lurking close behind and came with a stiff challenge but could not get the better of Hidden Dragon. In the last couple of strides Notebale Runner wrested the second spot from Needforspeed in a photo finish for the runner up berth. John Cabot (Major Impact – Freedom Cry) was a bolt from the blue. Friendless in the betting ring, Sitting behind the leader Classsic Star, John Cabot shot ahead soon on straightening up. The favourite Classic Ruler was on the rails and making progress too. The Giantmeanwhile was offering a tough fight but never looked like making it. Classic Ruler had to be pulled out from the rails and made to switch to the outside. There was too much to do and with very little time and ground to cover, he could only get close to the winner. Classic Ruler missed a certain opportunity and the luck of the race favoured John Cabot. Arbudh (Royal Kingdom – Musical Pepper) went on a successful start to finish mission. However, he kept going despite having to counter several threats from different rivals. In the straight, he had Chief Warrior challenging him early. Arbudh managed to shake him off when Jolteon and Johnny Bravo came from either side. They looked headed for a close finish but Arbudh managed to pull it off by a fair margin.
