Dubawi’s Night of Thunder trained by Richard Hannon was masterly handled by Kieren Fallon to land the spoils in the G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday. The juvenile was the second string from the stable with Richard Hughes’s mount Toormore being the fancied one from the yard.
As the field of fourteen was dispatched, Night of Thunder moved across to race with the bunch on the far side and was in touch in mid-field. Passing the three furlongs marker James Doyle started to work on the favourite Kingman and they improved gradually to hit the front inside the last furlong. Australia was in chase close to the favourite and Night of Thunder emerged between them with an astounding heave. Night of Thunder started to hang left badly in the closing stages and Fallon put down his stick and lifted the son of Dubawi to beat Kingman by half a length. Australia finished third another ‘head’ behind while another longshot from Hannon’s yard Shifting Power finished fourth 2 ¼ lengths adrift.
"I have to say I thought he would run very well. We were a little disappointed after Newbury and it is lovely to see him come back and turn the form round with Kingman," said the winning trainer Richard Hannon.
