DAN EXCEL SHINES IN SINGAPORE
By Racing Correspondent | 19 May 2014 |
Dan Excel, trained by John Moore did well to lift the G1 Singapore Airlines International Cup under the lights at Kranji race track in Singapore on Sunday. The son of Shamardal, a runner-up to stable companion Military Attack in last year’s edition of the 2000 m race, was handled superbly by Tommy Berry to win the race by a length and three quarters.
Military Attack was widely expected to repeat last year’s feat, sent in as the odds-on favourite for the race. Dan Excel wasn’t the smartest from the gates from a favourable draw along the rails but was quickly rushed to sit handy, close to the pacesetter Tokei Halo. Berry alerted his mount nearing the half-mile marker and ‘Dan’ moved up swiftly to be on the haunches of the Japanese raider. Inside the last furlong and a half Dan Excel took charge and sped away to establish a two lengths lead. Smoking Sun covered ground towards the closing stages to be the runner-up ahead of Military Attack.
“I think the gate made the difference and it was a (great) ride from Tommy,” said trainer John Moore. “To see him win like that, it was a bit of a replica of Military Attack last year. This horse has been the underdog for so many big races and today he excelled.”
