Kingman (James Doyle Up), winner of The Tattersalla Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr.1)
John Gosden trained Kingman had an easy outing in the G1 Tattersalla Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh, justifying the favouritism with a five lengths victory. Jockey James Doyle who was recently contracted as a retained rider by the connections tasted his first classic win with the new team.
“I feel on top of the world at the minute and I’m really thankful to be in the position I am in,” James said. “Prince Khalid has given me the opportunity to ride these great horses and when we can win these races it feels like we’re repaying him. Sometimes you have to pinch yourself, but I’ll be covered in bruises if I keep doing that!” he added.
On a soft ground due to rains at The Curragh, Kingman settled well in mid-field during the early part of the race. Improving to be about fourth on the outer, as they approached the last 2 furlongs, Kingman quickened readily to head past the long time leader Shifting Power with a furlong left and stretched out to increase the lead to be five lengths ahead at the finish. Mustajeeb finished third behind Shifting Power.
“It’s heavy ground out there, but the track is in pristine condition and he handled it very well,” said trainer John Gosden. “This mile takes some getting in these conditions and I told him James to sit chilly and wait, as I knew they would go strong enough and he rode him beautifully. Two out, you could see he was still cruising and he’s a very talented horse.”
