Marvellous (Ryan Moore Up), winner of The Etihad Airways Irish 1000 Guineas (Gr.1)
Aidan O’Brien trained Marvellous scored a sensational win in the G1 Etihad Airways Irish 1000 Guineas under testing underfoot conditions at The Curragh. In her only third career start, the daughter of Galileo, a 10-1 shot raced towards the rear under Ryan Moore. Passing the half way stage, she was last of the field and gradually began to improve to be ninth approaching the three furlongs marker. Closing up further Marvellous came tearing down the favourite Lightening Thunder inside the last furlong and shot clear to register a three lengths win. Vote Often ended up third ahead of Avenue Gabriel.
The filly was the second string from the stable with Palace being the fancied one for the race. Joseph O’Brien chose to ride Palace although he had the choice to choose between the two. The Galileo filly now heads to the Investec Oaks for which she is now being offered 7-1 from 20-1 before the race. When Aidan O’Brien was asked if she would run in the Oaks on June 6, he said: "I couldn't see any reason why not."
“You would have to be very pleased, as it was only her third run and was in deep ground,” said jockey Ryan Moore. “She was drawn towards the outside and was a long way back, so had to do it the hard way. I was taken off my feet after a furlong and couldn’t really hold my spot, but when I asked her she did pick up and I think she was just pretty inexperienced during the race. She should get further and I’m sure she’d be a better filly on nicer ground.”
