Kevin Ryan trained The Grey Gatsby won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club popularly called the French Derby, on Sunday at Chantilly in France. Considered to be a fluke winner in the G2 Dante Stakes on May 15th, the son of Mastercraftsman coming from England silenced his critics while beating the local line up comprehensively under Ryan Moore, in a new race record time.
“I didn’t feel that he got the credit he deserved after the Dante,” said trainer Kevin Ryan as he led in his first Classic winner. “We were quite confident coming here and Ryan gave him a fantastic ride.”
The Grey Gatsby who was a bit jittery before the loading got off to a good start from draw 6 and was rallying well with the front group to begin with. The grey was hampered badly for room and lost that position to be second last with the favourite Prince Gibraltar in tow. Ryan Moore who had The Grey Gatsby along the inner rails moved up well to get to striking position with Shamkiyr in the front and Gonna Run alongside. Finding an opening inside the last furlong The Grey Gatsby went for it and streaked clear to win by three lengths. Shamkiyr finished on being second while Prince Gibraltar came close to take the third spot after working his way through traffic snarls.
