Trainer Aidan O’Brien made history when Australia, son of the illustrious Galileo, labelled as the best horse he’s trained outclassed the field in the G1 Investec Derby at the Epsom Downs on Saturday. Aidan became the first trainer to win a Derby hat-trick in the 235 years history of the premier event. The last two wins were Camelot in 2012 and Ruler of The World in 2013. His son Joseph O’Brien piloted Australia in the race to take home his second Derby success after Camelot.

The 11-8 favourite Australia was held up in mid-field early and moved up to be eighth nearing the straight. It was smooth transition when he pressed the leaders in the final two furlongs. Shooting to the lead with a furlong left, Australia easily kept Kingston Hill at bay. Romsdal did well to finish third ahead of Arod.

Heaping praises on Australia, the trainer said, “We’ve always thought he was very special, because of the pace he has being bred the way he is and he showed that today. He’s a beautiful specimen and the most unbelievable Galileo to have come along, as he has the speed of a miler and gets a mile and a half. We felt we had never had anything like it and he was one of those who looks too good to be true, but he’s never disappointed us in any way.”

“He’s the best I’ve ridden," admitted the rider Joseph O’Brien. “I was cantering all the way and got there too soon. He had a good look when he got there, but horses don’t come any easier to ride than this one.”
