Jean-Claude Rouget trained Avernir Certain, winner of the French 1000 Guineas on May 11th completed a Classic double while winning the G1 Prix de Diane Longines – the French Oaks- at Chantily race track on Sunday.  The daughter of Le Havre winner of all its four starts was sent in to the race at 31-10. The filly’s stamina over the 1 mile and 2 1/2 furlongs was being tested for the first time and she handled the trip with panache.

Avenir Certain raced towards the rear initially with just two of the dozen runners trailing her while Bawina and Miss France disputed the lead with the favourite Shamkala in third. Approaching the last two furlongs jockey Gregory Benoist got Avenir Certain to make her bid on the wide outside and the filly flew down the field with brilliant acceleration to get to the lead inside the last 100 metres and spare a good length at the finish. Rank outsider Amour A Papa ended up second ahead of Xcellence and Shamkala in a blanket finish for the minor places.

“It is hard to summarise the feelings straight after a race like this, but needless to say this is a great result,” said trainer Jean-Claude Rouget who was winning his third French Oaks in six years. “I have some experience now as an old-timer and she was not certain to stay, so I told Gregory to wait as long as he could and be patient.”
