TORONADO TAKES THE QUEEN ANNE BY STORM

Toronado (Richard Hughes Up), winner of the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr.1)
Richard Hannon trained Toronado crafted a sensational ‘come-back’ win in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes, the opening race of day one at the Royal Ascot. The son of High Chaparral who was not sighted on a race track after his loss in the G1 Juddmonte International at York in August was ridden by Richard Hughes with great aplomb to justify the favouritism.
Toronado was held up towards the rear in the early part of the mile trip and started to make headway switching left as they approached the last two furlongs. Accelerating brilliantly, Toronado shot through the split inside the last furlong and stayed in command till the finish. Verrazano finished as the runner-up three parts of a length adrift while Anodin was third another length and a quarter away.
"That was like switching a light on," said Richard Hughes. "He was so relaxed and lazy in the race. I think any horseman in the world would believe he is a great horse that could win this before the race."
The winning trainer Richard Hannon commenting on Toronado’s win said, "It is great - wonderful to get the meeting off to a start like that. Toronado did it very well. He is settling much better this year and Hughesie rode him with all the confidence in the world.”
