The Fugue (William buick Up), winner of the Prince of Wales's Stakes (Gr.1)
John Gosden trained The Fugue put in a sterling performance to win the G1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes in record time, on day 2 at the Royal Ascot. This was the first time in eight years that a filly has won the race and also only the seventh in the list of winners. The Fugue after being a disappointment in the G1 Dubai Duty Free was sent in as the second favourite at 11-2 behind last year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Treve.
The Fugue was held up in mid-field and traveling easy early on. The filly started to close up towards the leaders nearing the last 2 furlongs and when her rider William Buick set her alight with a furlong left she came tearing down Magician and drew clear by 1 3/4 lengths in a new track record timing. Treve never looked her own even as she tried to get to Magician and ended up third another length adrift.
“This race was all about girl power, with Treve and this filly and although I wouldn’t want to take her on over 12 furlongs on soft ground in the Arc. Today was summer racing, 1 1/4- miles on good-to-firm and that’s different” said trainer John Gosden who was leading in his second Ascot winner this year.
"She's been an absolute star for me and everyone back at the yard. She proved today what she can do against top-class horses,” said jockey William Buick.
