ANTHEM ALEXANDER SLAMS THE QUEEN MARY

By Racing Correspondent | 18 Jun 2014 |

Edward Lynam schooled Anthem Alexander justified the favouritism in the G2 Queen Mary Stakes. The filly received strong support after her maiden success at Tipperary on June 5 in her only second start. The jump out was rather sluggish for the daughter of Starspangledbanner but the youngster recovered quickly to be with the front runners on the stands’ side. The filly went smoothly to the lead with a little over a furlong left from home and thwarted the effort of Newsletter first and Tiggy Wiggy later. Tiggy Wiggy was second, a ‘neck’ behind the winner and Newsletter finishing third another half a length away.

"She's brave and very quick," commentated the rider Pat Smullen about the young filly. "She was a little bit sluggish away from the gate. The gap was closing up, so I had to take it, which was maybe even a little bit too soon for her. She's still a little bit green, there's a lot of improvement in her. She could have given up if she was weak-minded but she's 100 % genuine and tough and she stuck it out to the line. It’s so tough here and this is the big stage", he added.
