Leading Light (Joseph O'Brien Up), winner of Gold Cup (Gr.1)
Montjeu’s Leading Light won the G1 Gold Cup at the Royal Ascot in a thrilling finish on Thursday. Trainer Aidan O’Brien created history with a sixth renewal in the last nine. Leading Light was sent off as the favourite at 10-11 over the grueling 20 furlongs trip after its successful campaign in the G3 Queen’s Vase here last year and the G1 St Leger at Doncaster. The measure of its stamina was further enhanced when he took the G3 Vintage Crop Stakes on May 18.
The bay colt was settled well to chase the leaders early while Missunited set the pace. Jockey Joseph O’Brien started to drive Leading Light as they approached the final straight with the Queen’s Estimate traveling well just in behind. Joseph kept Leading Light going straight as Rayan Moore on Estimate looked for a run from the inside with Missunited being relentless and a weakening Brown Panther also in that cluster nearing the last pole. Leading Light took charge inside the last 100 yards and held on gamely by a neck from Estimate and Missunited hanging on to be third a whisker away.
"Your heart was in your mouth for that one," said O'Brien commenting about the thrilling finish. "He had a lovely position and stayed well but he was just very lazy when he got there. I think Joseph did very well,” he added.
