AUSTRALIA COMPLETES A DERBY DOUBLE

By Racing Correspondent | 28 Jun 2014 |

Trainer Aidan O’Brien scored his eleventh renewal when Australia won the Dubai Duty Free sponsored G1 Irish Derby at the Curragh racetrack on Saturday. Australia, the winner of the Epsom Derby was sent off at odds of 1-8 for the Derby, which had only five starters and the son of Galileo went about with his task with utmost ease. O.Brien had the icing on the cake when two of his other runners, Kingfisher and Orchestra finished second and third respectively to give him a fifth 1-2-3 since 2002.

Australia settled easily in third while stable companions Kingfisher and Orchestra led the pack in that order. Australia made smooth transition to the front on entering the straight and jockey Joseph O’Brien had the luxury of looking back with a furlong left and ease up towards the closing stages.

“He’s a horse we've never made any secret of how highly we rate him,” said the rider Joseph O’Brien. “He was probably entitled to win like that, but he has loads of pace and is a dream to ride.”

Trainer Aidan O’Brien whose success rate in this particular race is unmatchable was modest as always with the win and added, “You are always worried and there is no such thing as certainty in racing, but we were lucky to have two good trial winners to go up front. He has a lot of class and travels and is a lovely natured horse”.
