Royal Shaan (Royal Gladiator-Shanavi), the 7 year old bay gelding from the stables of C.V.G.Kishore scored a straightforward win in the Nairn Trophy, a mile race for horses rated 60 and above that featured Wednesday’s eight races card at Mysore. Royal Shaan had finished second in its previous two races, the best effort being the last start where he lost to Duma on the post after leading from the start over a mile. Sofast which had finished in the money in all its nine starts was popularly expected to win the race and was sent off as the favourite.

Mumbai Import Song of Sparrow which had not gone beyond six furlongs in its career set off in front as the gates opened with Royal Shaan in second and Sofast settled well in third. Nearing the 3 furlongs pole Royal Shaan surged forward to take over the running and came into the home stretch about three lengths in front of Song of Sparrow. Sofast started to work its way from the outside and Spaniard just on its inside began to drift out and both of them moved away from their line to run close to the outer edge as they headed past the 300 metres pole. Royal Shaan kept going without any serious challenge emerging from the rear and won quite comfortably. Song of Sparrow ended up second ahead of the late finishing Demanding Format. Color Me filled the judge’s frame while the favourite Sofast finished off it for the first time in its career.

Class Above (Oath-Renascent), the youngster from S.Rakesh’s yard scored an impressive victory in the Konark Plate, a five and a half furlongs scurry for maiden 3 year old horses. Sent off as the ‘on money’ favourite among the dozen runners, Class Above showed plenty of speed at start to head straight to the fence from the outermost draw. Leading all the way Class Above won with authority with Kallistrate in chase throughout. Albatross and Friends Forever finished third and fourth respectively.

Pratap Kamath trained Spinning Chakram (Lucifer Sam-Hyacinth) scored an encore in the Paschimavahini Plate. A winner over seven furlongs in its last start Spinning Chakram won the extended mile trip effortlessly. There was a flurry of activity at the betting ring with Pipes of Peace opening as the favourite at 17-10 and surprisingly the price on Spinning Chakram eased out to 7-2. Spinning Chakram looked good and fit as they were paraded in the paddock and the die-hard supporters of the filly stuck to their choice that resulted in the price sliding down to ‘Evens’. Settling easily in third behind Badshah and Queens Cruise, Spinning Chakram made way for herself even before straightening up and shot ahead to the front. Jockey Y.S.Srinath peeped back to look for any probable threat and finding none eased up the filly much before the finish line. Spiritual Blue ended up as the runner-up ahead of Queens Cruise and As Always.

Trainer S.Santosh Kumar opened his season’s account with a ‘Colourful’ double through Queen’s Colour and Flying Tricolour, both 7 year olds. Queen’s colour (Brave Act-Kariba) won the higher division of the Itarsi Plate. Despite finishing second in its last outing the grey was neglected in the betting with a liberal quote of 6-1. Settling in second on the haunches of Lightening Thunder till entering the final straight, Queen’s Colour grabbed the lead and kicked on till the winning post. Kohinoor Glamour, a back-marker till the last 400 metres came with along stretched run to finish a close second. The favourite Time To Time was a tame third ahead of Greenbro.

Flying Tricolour (Hurricane State-Green Paradise) won the Magadi Plate from start to finish. Precept was the only one to challenge inside the last 300 metres but failed to collar the leader and landed second. Born For Beauty finished third ahead of Little Athena.

Bipin V Salvi trained Beyond Thankful (Gaswar-Ladyfeelgood) justified the short priced favouritism with a thumping win in the Doddaballapura Plate. On entering the last 400 metres Mother Ewa was the first to take the initiative and get to the front. Beyond Thankful racing in fourth till then moved swiftly around the horses in front and flashed ahead with minimum effort and stretched out well to win by 10 lengths. Scholar finished second in front of Mother Ewa.

A good gamble was successfully pulled off by the connections of Napolean Dynamite (Storm Trooper-Pamela Bird) in the lower division of the Itarsi Plate. The 5 year old from the stables of S.M.Johnson ended up as the favourite towards race time. Chasing the leader Ensatus Elegans till the top of the straight Napolean Dynamite grabbed the lead and was never threatened. Ensatus Elegans rallied on to finish second.

P.C.Tejaswi trained Young Gallant (Tejano-Aldiora) winless from 16 starts scored a stunning upset in the Varanasi Plate, the opener of the day. Off to a good start from 11 draw Young Gallant rushed to the front under V.R.Jagadeesh and took the rest by surprise entering the last 400 metres with a four lengths lead. Jockey Y.S.Srinath on the favourite La Piperi probably expected the leader to pack up and finding it relentless got busy on his mount. La Piperi covered ground in the last 100 metres but fell short by half a length at the finish. Go Man Go and Erica filled the frame in that order.
