Andre Fabre trained Gallante pulled off a stunning upset in the G1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris in soft underfoot conditions at Longchamp. Sent off at 66-1 the son of Montjeu beat the favourite Prince Gibraltar by a short neck while the winner of the Dante and the Prix du Jockey Club (the French Derby) just did not relish the going and ended up sixth.
Gallante led the field early and settled prominently in third once he was headed. Jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot began to make his move from the inside on Gallante when Teletext took charge on the wide outside with a quarter mile left from home. Gallante moved strongly to take the lead inside the final furlong and surged clear. Prince Gibraltar was closing on the winner but Gallante did well to hold on by a slender margin to give Boudot his first Group 1 win.
"My horse had a lot of energy when the race started in earnest but I didn't ask him for everything straight away. When he did pick up he really accelerated well and I was always happy I was holding off Prince Gibraltar," said jockey Boudot. "It's an emotional win because I made winning a Group 1 an objective and for it to happen today on a super horse for big owners is the culmination of a lot of work," he added commenting on his first Group 1success.
“He is a nice horse who was under the influence of a virus earlier this season,” explained trainer Andre Fabre. “Obviously, he loved the soft ground and will be back for the [Sept. 14] G2 Prix Niel.”
