CHARM SPIRIT SLAMS THE PRIX JEAN PRAT
By Racing Correspondent | 15 Jul 2014 |
Invincible Spirit’s Charm Spirit, trained by Freddy Head was given a brilliant ride by Oliver Peslier to win the G1 Prix Jean Prat in the dying moments of the race at Chantilly on Monday. Charm Spirit came into the race with a win in the G3 Prix Paul de Moussac on June 7 after a fifth in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
Sent off as the favourite at 2-1, the youngster was held back in fifth after being prominent early when the field shuffled for positions. Looking for room along the fence on entering the straight Charm Spirit found daylight when the leader Yuften lugged in right and Oliver grabbed the chance to take his mount through the opening and with a drive in the closing stages made it close home.
Yuften originally finished second ahead of Shifting Power in third and La Hoguette fourth. Following an inquiry into its wayward running, Yuften was relegated to fourth and Shifting Power and La Hoguette moved up to be second and third respectively.
“We had some worries in the straight, but he finally got through and with the good turn of foot he has, he was able to get there just in time,” said the winning trainer Freddy Head and added “I think he could return for a race like the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville (Aug.17).”
