Trainer C D Monnappa leading Rising Rani (Vishwanath Up), winner of The Varahi Trophy

C.D.Monnappa trained Rising Rani (Mull of Kintyre-Flying Rani) scored a bloodless win in the Varahi Trophy that featured Wednesday’s races at Mysore. The 3 year old filly was a winner on debut and later finished second twice and third once in her subsequent starts where Fink had emerged as the winner in all the three. The filly being the only 3 year old among the dozen runners was sent off as the short priced favourite. Kohinoor Blitz set off in front early and Rising Rani was not hurried and preferred to track the leader. As the heads turned for home Rising Rani surged ahead with a fluent gallop and with utmost ease went past the winning post over four lengths clear of the runner-up Ben Ten. Kohinoor Blitz finished third another five lengths away.

The 7 year old Royal Shaan (Royal Gladiator-Shanavi) from the stables of C.V.G.K.Kishore who has peaked to form scored an encore in the Abide Plate. A small field of five runners lined up for the start and Royal Shaan was the rousing favourite among them at 100-45 ‘on’. The gelding led early and settled well in second when Al Attaturk decided to go to the front. Rounding the final bend Royal Shaan moved nicely to regain the lead under A Ashhad Asbar and stretched out effortlessly. Spaniard improved places to take the second spot ahead of Al Attaturk.

Trainer C.D.Monnappa was the only professional to score a double on the day. His 3 year old filly As Always (Brave Act-Somerset West) pulled of a surprise in the Oxford Blue Plate to deny a win to the favourite Charm And Dream. The favourite racing in about fourth or fifth till the last 600 metres sneaked in towards the fence and grabbed the lead as they straightened up. Ayman was on the haunches of Charm And Dream but its effort to get to the leader was turning out to be futile. Just when it looked like Charm And Dream would pull it off, came As Always with a long stretch run from the second last position to flash past all of them and win by a length. Ayman finished on being third. Gayle’s Storm was withdrawn on veterinary grounds.

Debutant Masteroftherolls (Declaration of War-Absolute Faith) from Bipin Salvi’s yard scored a stylish win in the Queen of the Hills Plate. Sancy tried start to finish tactics and led the field till the last 200 metres. Albatross and Masteroftherolls were beginning to muster a challenge from behind and Bipin’s trainee quickened with a flourish to spare a length over Albatross at the finish. First Light gathered momentum late to finish third, a ‘neck’ behind Albatross.

Ranjeet Shinde trained Ensatus Elegans (Epicentre-Samurai Sword) placed well on the scales justified the favouritism in the Scone Stone Plate. Ice brown was the leader from the word ‘go’ with Ensatus Elegans in chase till the top of the straight. When jockey Shobhan Babu asked Ensatus Elegans to quicken, she did it readily and took the path along the fence to beat Ice Brown by a length after a short duel. Penalty Kick and Time To Time finished third and fourth respectively.

The remaining two races of the day were for horses rated 00-25. Vikram Appachu trained Supreme Strength (Case Law-Inkling) who received strong support in the betting towards race time to be the favourite, pulled it off successfully in the Karighatta Plate. Heading to the front at start over the seven furlongs trip, Supreme Strength made every post a winning one. Time Matters was the only one to throw a challenge – a half-hearted one- finished second three parts of a length behind the winner.

S.Rakesh trained Sharp Girl (Sussex-Acquitaine) pulled off an upset in the Diabolical Plate. Javelin led from the start and held forte till the distance marker. Perfect Speed, Queens Cruise and Sharp Girl were in tow and the last named strode out well to grab the lead. Perfect Speed changed tactics to bid from behind but failed to collar Sharp Girl when asked for an effort. Javelin finished third in front of Queens Cruise.
