BRACELET ADORNS THE IRISH OAKS
By Racing Correspondent | 19 Jul 2014 |
Aidan O’Brien trained Bracelet won the G1 Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh on Saturday beating stable companion Tapestry in a narrow finish. Jockey Colm O’Donoghue who had returned from an unsuccessful sojourn at Hong Kong was given the ride on the G2 Ribblesdale Stakes winner after Joseph chose to ride Tapestry. The start of the race was delayed by almost twenty minutes after the ‘trailer’ shoes on Volume’s hind legs – which is not allowed in Ireland- had to be removed and replaced. Bracelet however kept her cool throughout the delay while Tapestry did not relish it much.
Donoghue settled Bracelet into a fine rhythm with cover around her, in mid-field early while Volume called the shots in front. Breaking into the open approaching the last two furlongs Bracelet loomed quickly to get to the lead and held on by a neck from Tapestry who was closing up towards the finish. Volume was an identical distance behind in third while Beyond Brilliance ridden by Aidan’s daughter Anna O’Brien finished on strongly taking the fourth spot, thus making it a 1-2-4 in the race for this accomplished trainer.
“She came into the race with a very good profile and did it well,” said Bracelet’s rider Colm O’Donoghue. “She's quite a calm character, so the delay didn’t matter and she was bred to win this.”
“I’m delighted for Colm, as he’s got beat in this race a few times and has also been beat in the Derby a few times”, said Aidan and added, “he gave her a marvelous ride and he’s a world-class rider.”
